Melbourne deserves world fame for its street art. And exploring on foot for a few hours is a really good activity for your child. Unlike art galleries, there are no rules against pets!
Melbourne’s most famous street art destination, Hoosier Lane, is located in the city center just off Federation Square. I also highly recommend nearby ACDC Lane and Deckboard Place. Combine walking your dog with a visit to a dog-friendly cafe, whether it’s down a city street or on the banks of the Yarra.
If you don’t fancy heading straight to the city centre, there are plenty of good examples in other suburbs too, perfect for brunch at a cafe or a drink at a local pet-friendly pub.
If you prefer nature to sandy trails, one of the best places to visit outside of Melbourne is Yu Yang Regional Park. Located less than an hour from central Melbourne, this regional park welcomes dogs to join you as long as they are on a leash.

Yu Yang is named after a local Aboriginal word for “big mountain in the middle of the plain”. The park’s most popular hiking trail leads to the summit of Flinders Peak. From this black rock there are excellent views towards Melbourne and across the Bellarine Peninsula. The 3.5 km return walk took about an hour to complete, with several steps along the way.
There are also a variety of short and long hikes, including some great options. An easy option is the 800m circuit around Big Rock. Don’t miss the short walk to this granite outcrop just 100 meters from the car park. The park also has several picnic areas.
A great weekend visit from Melbourne, where pups love Miss Drew’s Bakery and Dog Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula. Located behind Tiab’s Packing House and surrounded by antique shops, the dog shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays. (Best to check opening hours in advance).
There’s a variety of dog treats on the menu, from pugichinos to muffins and cookies. Maybe order a dog treat and enjoy it at one of the many tables. There is a shop selling treats and toys and the option to order a dog birthday cake.

St Kilda has long been a popular day trip destination in Melbourne, and is also a great place to visit with your child. While your dog is not allowed on rides at Luna Park Amusement Park, instead walk along the pier (where dogs are allowed) and enjoy the surrounding beaches.
The closest dog-friendly beach in St Kilda is on the west side of the pier towards the drainage channel off Pier Road. Here, dogs are allowed off leash all day, all year round. In the east, dogs are only allowed on the sand during winter. Dogs are allowed on the sand all year round in St Kilda West, except for the dune areas between Brooks Jetty and the northern end of the St Kilda Marina car park.
