Lisa Rodriguez Holmgren has visited Hawaii’s Garden Island at least ten times and has never taken a dog on a field trip. She didn’t even know it was a thing. She fell while shopping on a rainy day in May 2022 for the Humane Society of Kauai’s field trip program for shelter dogs. A brochure I found lists fun travel things that vacationers can do for a few hours or a whole day with a dog that needs a home—from hiking to coast-to-coast walks to coast-to-coast walks.

“He was the sweetest guy in the car with his feet on the console, and she would kiss you on the cheek and put her head on your shoulder,” Holmgren recalled of their first destination in the car. “He didn’t jump on us and he didn’t jump on anyone else.” “She was sleeping by my feet,” Holmgren said the day after her sister suggested they sleep together.
When Raven (known as Ravenclaw at the shelter) met her new aunt, “he remembered us,” said Holmgren, who was still excited about their souvenir from Kauai. “You’re not crazy. It’s right for you.”
Erica Dare, 38, and her three daughters (17, 14 and 11) had similar vibes when they took Dare’s second trip with the dog in September. Her daughters moved to the island first. Dear, from Paris, California, was told about the field trip program by an airport bus driver. They saved their field trip for the last day of their eight-day vacation to hike the Sleeping Giant, one of Kauai’s most famous hiking trails. When they arrive at the shelter, they find someone who matches them. “We all looked at each other and said, ‘Oh, we’re in trouble,'” Derr said.

The five, including two-year-old baby Stella, were a group of girls for about five hours. Along with their outings, Dare said they made trips to Starbucks for a PupCup. On the way back to the shelter, Dear said, the car felt numb.
“Suddenly I was so happy and everything was calm,” says Dare, who surprised her children by adopting Stella after the holidays, adding that Dare always told her daughters to go to the airport to pick up their new dog.
The Kauai Humane Society began its outreach program ten years ago, and Nicole Schaefer-Crane, the shelter’s executive director, took over. Half of the shelter’s dogs are surrendered to their owners because of housing problems, Crane said. With only 70,000 to 80,000 residents and 33,000 properties, many dog owners are unable to care for their dogs when their housing situation changes. Other dogs were abandoned and some went missing.

Raven was found on the street with another dog, and her first adoption from the shelter failed because Raven was labeled an escape artist, Holmgren said.
“They left him in the yard and he ran off next door and went in through the doggy door. I can totally see it because she wants to be with people. She’s a very friendly dog. It’s comforting to us because he’s retired.”
According to Schaefer Crane, 80% of field travelers are Australian; Argentina and France Switzerland vacationers from the upper 48 countries.
“We are a very simple and affordable operation,” she said. The shelter doesn’t just “match dogs with the right people,” it often helps the outing with their plans for the day.

They release dogs with their families all the time, especially dogs that live with children, Schaefer-Crane said. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and dog. Online reservations are recommended, especially during winter holidays. The Kauai shelter sends approximately 20 dogs on each field trip Monday through Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Field leaders are given a backpack filled with essential supplies including towels, water, plates, treats, toys and pet waste bags.
Field trip programs are rare on the mainland, but two other Hawaiian islands offer similar programs. In Maui, for a $50 donation, the Maui Humane Society hosts a Beach Buddies guest program on Wednesdays and Fridays. Like the Kauai program, the shelter recommends booking a field trip at least a few months before your vacation.
The shelter provides adopters with a booklet with recommendations on where to hike each day, including the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve Trail for an “easy” hike or the Kahakapao Loop Trail in the Makawao Forest Reserve for a “moderate” hike.

On Hawaii Island, Hawaii Island Humane Society Field Trips for Shelter Dogs Friday; Dogs are sent on outings on Saturdays and Sundays. Their program requires a $25 donation, and executive director Lauren Nickerson recommends booking online. Hawaii Island has plenty of dog-friendly options, including Shipman Beach. The hike leads to a “secret beach,” Nickerson said.
“So we recommend [hiking] for some short-distance hikers inside our active stadium, with an active, sporting dog at the ready… It’s definitely a highlight for anyone visiting the island,” Nickerson explained.
Also recommended is Liliukalani Garden, a Japanese garden on the dog-friendly side of Hilo. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park allows dogs only on paved trails. The national park has its own bark ranger program. “The shelter dogs came back wearing park ranger signs, which is really cool,” Nickerson said.

Kauai For Dog Lovers: Fur Ever Friends
“[It’s important] to bring dangerous dogs into the world,” Nickerson explained. “It shows that the dogs are very therapeutic and even if you take them out of the shelter for an hour it will tire them out and improve their behaviour, relaxation and mood.
Medium-sized dogs weighing 25 to 50 pounds are most at risk in shelters, Nickerson said. “They’re very ignorant. The more time they spend in the shelter, the more time they spend in the shelter and the more time they spend in the dog kennel, the less in the shelter environment. So psychologically, they’re really dangerous, behaviorally and psychologically.”
Getting their long-term resident dogs ready for field trips is a top priority, Nickerson said. The two shelters on the island run by Nickerson have about 100 dogs, 75% of which are adults or seniors. There are about 50 puppies and 100 puppies at the Kauai shelter, which collects as many dogs as possible for socialization.
