The 28-kilometer barrier island of St. George is divided into three parts. Nine miles east of St. George State Park is protected. The center has excellent access to the beach, residential areas, restaurants, shops and businesses. West End is an exclusive, gated community with its own jetty and some of the most expensive homes on the Gulf of Mexico.

Our first stop was at a state park, and we found that the grounds and trails were wild, but the beach was not. Still, it’s nice to have some variety, and our dogs really enjoyed the 2.5 mile Gap Point trail through pine forests. (The parking lot is on campus, and the trail is to the left of the stadium.)

After the ride, it’s time to hit the soft sea creatures again! Return to the city of St. George, where the public beaches go wild – all day, all year!

As Port St. Joe, the primary residence here is a vacation rental. Although the St. George Inn has a few pet-friendly rooms, there are several pet-friendly hotels in Apalachicola, just 12 miles away.

Of all the Florida Panhandle beaches we visited, Alligator Point was the quietest and most secluded. The nearest grocery store was about 30 miles away, but with eight miles of mountain wilderness – who needs to eat?!
