After all, the holidays are more fun when you can bring your best friend. However, finding a dog-friendly hotel in New England requires a lot of research. What are the hotel rules for dogs? Are there any additional fees? Are there weight or breed restrictions? And you may worry that you will have to sacrifice peace of mind to travel with your dog. Are boat motels and roadside campsites the only option to “incubate” it? Or are there places to stay that not only allow dogs, but actually care about dogs and their owners?
I’m here to save you a lot of time and worry when planning your next vacation with your dog. I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of my favorite dog friendly hotels in New England where I stayed with Roscoe. So there’s no reason to leave your best friend behind the next time you’re on the road! Put your paws on some cozy places to stay in New England.
Dog Friendly Vacations In The Northeast
Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, Basin Harbor believes that no family vacation is complete without four-legged family members. Their pet policy allows well behaved dogs of all sizes in the cabin for a daily fee of $20 per pet. To book online, you can select any cabin and then add the pet fee at checkout.
Dog Friendly Sea View Cottages
The resort has everything you need for the perfect vacation without leaving the sprawling 700 acres. Choose from a wide range of activities that are fun for the whole family, from land to sea. The guest pools and waters are pet-free areas, but dogs have their own swimming area, Fanny Beach. We were even able to rent a sailboat so Roscoe and I could go out on the lake! In addition, you can eat in one of the resort’s five restaurants. Dogs are not allowed in the dining rooms, but they can dine with you in the outdoor Red Mill dining room. Dog walking and dog sitting are also available if you want to have fun without Fido.
From land to water, Basin Harbor has plenty for dogs to do.
The Field Guide Lodge in Stowe is a beautiful boutique hotel operated by Lark Hotels. Like many of their properties, their pet policy allows dogs up to 70 pounds for an additional fee of $50 per dog per day. We stayed in one of their three dog-friendly cottage suites, which have plenty of space and a private outside entrance. You can book these suites online, just remember to include your dog’s number, size and name at checkout. Dogs should not be left alone in guest rooms. Out of respect for other guests, dogs are leashed only on the verandas and outside the common areas of the hotel.
The hotel stands out for its elegant decoration in the style of a cottage. The lounge in the entrance hall, comfortably furnished with a retro wood stove and cozy furs, invites you to curl up with a book or a board game. You can have breakfast in the café in the lobby or have drinks and snacks in the brand new vintage bar Après. You have to book the outdoor hot tub in advance, which is a bit of a hassle. But the advantage is that you are guaranteed to keep it. And the location can’t be beat. We could walk to the center and the mountain bus stops right in front of the hotel. It’s the perfect home base for you and your dog on Vermont adventures.
Dog Friendly Vacations (roadtrips)
The Inn at Mountain View Farm is a very special place to stay in the heart of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Based on the pet policy, dogs are allowed for an additional fee of $50 per night in some rooms: Peacham, Danville, N. Danville, Maidstone and Lost Nation. You can choose “Pet Friendly” and book your room online. The inn is so pet-friendly that a friendly golden retriever works at the front desk and there’s even an animal shelter on site. If your dog reacts to other animals, be aware!
We stayed in the Deluxe Peacham room which was homey but comfortable. Roscoe especially liked to sleep in front of the wood stove. In the morning, we were welcomed in the main building of the inn with pastries and coffee hot from the oven. Just when we thought we couldn’t take another bite, the innkeeper brought out stacks of his famous farm-fresh blueberry pancakes that we couldn’t resist.
This 400-acre historic farm, perched atop a ridge in the pristine Northeast Kingdom, is one of the most magical places I’ve ever stayed. It was worth waking up in the morning to see the sunrise with its pastel pink and purple colors. Fog settles over the mountains and into the valley early in the morning.
The Kimpton Taconic in Manchester has one of the most liberal hotel pet policies I’ve seen. Everyone is welcome, from fur to wings, as long as they fit in the elevator! There are no restrictions on the size, weight, breed or number of pets, and there are no additional deposits or fees. Simply filter out pets when booking online and fill out the pet form at check-in.
Lincoln’s List: Dog Friendly Ne Road Trip Idea — Road Trip Locals
The Kimpton Taconic is truly the perfect place to pamper your dog. The rooms are equipped with food bowls, toys, treats and a plush bed for the Orvis dog. (The Orvis flagship store just down the road is a must-visit with the dog). Dogs are allowed in the hotel’s restaurant, the Copper Grouse lounge and the veranda dining room. During the colder seasons, they have outdoor heaters to keep you and your baby warm. Additionally, you can contact the front desk for pet services including but not limited to pet sitting, dog walking and pet spas.
Made in Vermont in downtown Burlington is a home away from home for you and your pet. Well-behaved furry friends are welcome at this urban chic bed and breakfast for a daily fee of $25 per pet. You can book directly online, just remember to add your dog to the number of guests and enter the details in the notes.
We stayed in room 904, one of the larger rooms recommended for large dogs. Plus it was pretty cozy with Roscoe and the bathrooms are down the hall (although at least they are private). The unique character of the inn may not be to everyone’s taste, but it has a great location within walking distance of the city center. The owner is very friendly and happy to give you suggestions for pet friendly restaurants and things to do in Burlington.
Located between the towns of Killington and Rutland in central Vermont, Mountain Top Resort not only allows dogs, it puts dogs first. Their pet policy states that canine companions are welcome in the resort’s four deluxe king staterooms and a selection of guest houses with pies, dog beds and Vermont bowls. You can book for an additional fee of $50 per dog per night, for a maximum of two dogs per unit. Dogs must be registered at the time of booking.
Most Dog Friendly Vacations In New England
The inn invites you to “come see, stay to experience”. Located on 700 acres in the heart of the Green Mountains, this resort offers incredible views of Chittenden Reservoir. With direct access to this incredible outdoor playground, there’s no shortage of fun things to do with your dog all year round. During the warmer months, enjoy the private beach where you can rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards for free. In winter and spring you can explore the cross-country and snowshoe trails. Dine outside with your dog on the terrace with a wonderful view of the meadow, lake and mountains during the day and arrange a cozy sitting place by the fireplace at night.
The Stowehof is my favorite dog-friendly hotel in Stowe. You can call and reserve dog-friendly rooms on the ground floor, which allow dogs of all sizes for an additional $25 per night and have direct access to the hotel’s expansive lawn.
This warm and welcoming cottage is built around exposed timber beams and stunning mountain views. It’s like a true alpine escape, timeless and relaxing. It may seem like the world around him may change, but Stohoff will forever be a familiar place to call home.
With simple but clean rooms, this is one of the more affordable hotel options in Stowe. Breakfast does not meet the requirements, so go elsewhere for your morning meal. But grab a drink from the Fritz bar and settle into a cozy spot with your dog. Choose between playing a board game in the large lounge, reading a good book in front of the large sunken fireplace or stargazing around the roaring outdoor fireplace.
