Best Dog Friendly Backpacking In The Upper Midwest

Don’t hunt the waterfall. Please stick to the Rovers and Lollipops you are used to. Just kidding – don’t go behind the falls (after a heavy rain) at this gorgeous (and free) state park! Less than 100 miles from Chicago, Starved Rock boasts 18 canyons, scenic sandstone cliffs, fun local wineries and breweries with dog-friendly patios, and a rich cultural history. Fall is best paws for a high ponytail in a stripe for a fun look.

From locally owned shops to beautiful parks and trails, Amish Country in Northern Indiana has plenty of pet-friendly things to do. Check out the Shipshewana Trading Place, where kids can browse the Midwest’s largest flea market right next to you. A word of caution: After a weekend of learning about the Amish way of life, you may find it difficult to return to the busy city.

Wisconsin is the perfect place to take lots of “cheesy” royalty free photos with dogs! Most restaurants allow dogs on their patios and many excellent bed and breakfasts welcome them. This resort is as much fun for the pups as it is for the people, so you can relax and recharge together. If you’re feeling less R&R and more outdoors, take a trip to Big Foot Beach State Park right on Lake Geneva.
