It was one of our best dog holidays ever and we loved the city so much we visited three times! A misty coastal town, Mendocino is very pet-friendly and is also the gateway to California’s Giant Redwoods, along with its sister cities of Ukiah and Willits.

You can treat yourself (and your pup) to a stay at the Stanford Inn (home of the famous Ravens restaurant where dogs can eat in the dining room!) or the Little River Inn, one of the best hotels in Mendocino. hotels. booking a dog-friendly dining room or Heritage House Resort and Spa (a luxury resort to pamper your dog) or the ever-reliable Holiday Inn Express in the Fort Bragg area, where we stayed during our visit to Fort Bragg for whale watching (which is also a dog-friendly experience) .
Adjacent to the Anderson Valley, one of California’s premium wine regions, home to crisp California Pinot Noir, Mendocino is blessed with wineries in Boonville and Yorkville in Anderson County, as well as the upper Russian River Valley around Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Hopland and Potter Valley. . dogs are welcome.

The Mendocino to San Francisco Coastal Drive is also another scenic drive full of amazing stops that you can’t miss!
Dogs are not allowed to hike in any of the Redwood Groves in Mendocino County, but you can read my great list of dog-friendly redwoods near San Francisco for many more options.
Dog Friendly Eureka
Anyone heading to Napa Valley is endlessly tempted by the splendor of the vineyards in St. Helena, Yountville, and Healdsburg, and so few end up up north in the sleepy town of Calistoga. Once a rural town full of farmland, Calistoga is now a figurative and literal hotbed thanks to all the spas and mud baths here due to the area’s massive geothermal activity.
Calistoga is also very dog-friendly, thanks to many pet-friendly lodging options, such as the Solage Resort (which has a charming outdoor dining patio) or the Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa, where we stayed and loved the experience during our recent road trip to Calistoga.
This perfect dog getaway has one more secret, Old Faithful Geyser (also has a goat farm…say what?) on the dog-friendly Tubbs Trail. There are also many dog-friendly wineries nearby where you can sample some good old fashioned wines with your best friend! Add this sleepy wine town to your list of dog friendly weekend getaways and you won’t be disappointed!
Murphys is a charming little town in Calaveras County, California (situated between San Francisco and Stockton) that no one tells you anything about. That’s definitely a good thing, because not only is it a great destination for a weekend getaway with the dogs, but it also has some of the cheapest and most diverse wine tones you’ll find in California.
Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals, Cabins, Beach Homes, Condos
Fun Fact: Calaveras County was made famous by Mark Twain in his story “The Celebrated Leaping Frog of Calaveras County,” so it’s no surprise that you’ll see bullfrog statues around this small town.
We stayed at the charming Courtwood Inn B&Bover for the weekend with Babu and explored the center of Murphys which is a high street with lots of tasting rooms and dog friendly restaurants.
Some of our favorite pet friendly restaurants to visit include Alchemy Market & Cafe, Grounds, Aria Bakery (you have to try their delicious croissants and scones) and V Restaurant & Bar has live music on the covered terrace which is great as we visited on a very rainy weekend .
Downtown tasting rooms like Gossamer Cellars (there’s a dog sign outside), Twisted Oak (their winery is popular for its unique sign leading to the tasting room, so get there early) and Frog’s Teeth let you make good old fashioned wine tasting friendly to the dogs. on the main street.
Dog Friendly Redwoods: How To Bring Your Pup To Redwood National Park
We also stopped at Chattom Winery (another winery in Murphys for dogs) to sample some more wines as we walked through the tasting room. The wines are either a mix of red, white and sometimes dessert wines and are very cheap at $5-10 per tasting and the fee is waived if you buy a bottle.
In addition to wine tasting, you can either walk around Murphys Community Park (which has a nice babbling brook) or hike the 17.5-mile Arnold Rim Trail, a popular Calaveras County trail that offers dog-friendly trails. In short, this quiet town is perfect for a weekend getaway with your dog.
Lodi, the Zinfandel capital of the world, is the best kept secret of California wine country. Dog or no dog, you’ll be mesmerized by Lodi’s world-renowned wineries, which have unparalleled scenic beauty and even better splashing cheap wine from $8 per person. Downtown Lodi also has several dog-friendly tasting rooms and most of their restaurants welcome dogs on covered patios, all within walking distance of this charming dog-friendly lodge where we stayed.
This is the perfect dog weekend getaway and one of our best dog vacations yet! I highly recommend visiting Toad Cellars downtown, Oak Farm Vineyards and Boquis Vineyards famous for their Iberian wines.
The Stanford Inn By The Sea In Mendocino, California, Is The Best Pet Friendly Hotel
Lodi Lake is a beautiful place to walk and don’t miss the Lodi Grape Pie at Smack Pie Pizza. Lodi is crazy about grapes and wine and you will have a great time there if wine tasting and natural beauty is your jam!
Enjoy Lodi with a luxury dog-friendly stay at the Wine & Roses Hotel (they have an outdoor pool, spa, and upscale restaurant) or at the trusted Econo Lodge Inn & Suites or Holiday Inn Express.
Santa Cruz is a mix of yoga and hippie with a California beach town, but there’s more to this place than meets the eye. Many people from the Bay Area flock to Santa Cruz for the crowded AF boardwalk (no dogs allowed and too noisy to walk) or stay in one of the noisy expensive hotels overlooking the beach. However, there is another side to the city and it is a very dog friendly and peaceful city.
Santa Cruz is home to the Coastal Redwoods, one of the tallest trees in the world, and you can fully enjoy its beauty when you stay in the nearby town of Bonny Dune at a beautiful dog-friendly B&B in the heart of the redwoods. A hidden beach where no one is in sight, close to Santa Claus
