Pet Friendly Lodging Zion – With the red and white walls of Navajo sand towering 2,000 feet above you, hiking with your pet in Zion National Park is an experience you won’t forget!
Zion is Utah’s first national park. And as you walk along the Virgo River, looking over the long sand dunes into the blue sky, it’s easy to see why! But how much of Zion’s Garden can you find in the house? We conducted a field survey to answer that question.
Pet Friendly Lodging Zion
Located in southern Utah, not far from Brice Canyon National Park and Dixie National Forest, Zion is amazing. With elevations ranging from 3,600 feet to 8,700 feet, the park protects a variety of wildlife, plants and spectacular scenery.

The best time to visit Zion National Park with pets is anytime but summer! Five million tourists visited the park in 2021, making it the second most visited national park in the United States. In addition to the crowds, the summer heat in Zion can be brutal. When we visited in late August, the highs and lows of the canal reached 104 degrees!
For a relaxing trip, consider visiting Zion in the winter. In fact, 550,000+ visitors descend on the park during the peak months of July, December and January and see a fifth as many people. Even in the middle of winter, the daytime temperature can reach 54 degrees – the best time to try it!
For our RVing friends: Plan to do it at Zion’s South Gate. Arriving at the east side of the park means passing through a famous tunnel. Almost all RVs, buses, trailers, semis, tow trucks, campers and boats require traffic control, which means marshals must stop oncoming traffic.
At Zion National Park, rental pets can accompany you on all trails. It is located on public roads and parking lots, in urban parks, and in all 22 locations along Highway 9 (Zion – Mount Carmel Hwy) and Pa’rus Road. Additionally, pets are welcome in Zion Lodge’s picnic area and grounds.
Dog Friendly Utah Road Trip
Pets cannot travel by other means, which means they are unlikely to travel together to Zion. But read on – we’ve got some great ways you’ll love!
Finally, pets are not allowed in the wilderness, on buses or in lodges, including Zion Lodge.
Zion National Park has two gates, the East Gate and the South Gate. If you do it at the eastern gate, you will soon have a great situation. If so, go to the visitor center. Instead, we stopped at every road to climb a huge sand dune, pink and red.

From the visitor center, go across the road to the bridge that crosses the river to pick up Pa’rus Road. Following the Virgin River from the station, the trail leads 1.8 miles to Canyon Junction.
Estimate that the drive will take two hours. Pack a picnic and have more time. And for longer hikes, read the Canyon Canyon section.
If you are visiting Zion with your pets in the summer, plan to walk Pa’rus Road in the morning or evening.
It’s hot! There is also not much protection. Being cold in the river is not a good idea. Zion is investigating the presence of cyanobacteria and harmful cyanotoxins in the Virgin River of the park. These toxins are always present, so keep your dog in the water and on a leash.

It’s also a good idea to bring your dog’s shoes! There are many bridges on Pa’rus Road, and on sunny days, the platform structures can be very hot. Before your pet walks over the bridge, touch the surface to avoid foot burns.
If you have made it to the South Zion Gate, after visiting the visitor center and walking along Pa’rus Road, go to the East Gate and enjoy the drive.
The centerpiece of Zion National Park is Canyon Canyon. It is home to the world famous Zion Lodge, Waterfall and Zion Lodge. For many years, access to Zion Canyon was open only to vehicles. Animals are not allowed in the car.
Of course, you can explore the Canyon by kayak. Or you can find a pet daycare center for your companion. But if you want to see Zion Canyon with your pet, you have two options.
Visiting Zion National Park With Pets
The first is walking or cycling. Pets are allowed on all freeways in Zion. But for many years, buses were the only vehicles on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Take Pa’rus Road 1.8 miles from the Visitor Center to Canyon Junction, where the road closure begins. From there it is 5.9 kilometers to Shinawava Temple at the end of the road.
Your other option is to go to Zion when the bus is not running. (That’s why we recommend planning your trip for December or January!)
The Sion bus service closes from the end of November until just before Christmas. And during that time, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive will be open to private vehicles. Your window to blast the famous pool with your best friend. Just remember that pets must stay on the sidewalk or carpeted floor.
The town of Springdale is conveniently located just outside the gates of South Zion. With pet-friendly hotels, parks, restaurants and dog parks, it’s a welcoming place for travelers with pets.

Stop by the visitor center for a few tips, then grab lunch or dinner! We found the friendly patio at Oscar’s Cafe to be the perfect place to eat.
To see a small part of Zion National Park with your pet, continue west on Highway 9 to Kolob Terrace Road, then head north. The 25-mile hike climbs from 3,550 feet to 8,118 feet and weaves in and out of the park. But the view makes the drive worthwhile!
You will drive on many roads on the way. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on all of these trails. But there is a picnic area and Lava Point view worth checking out!
At the end of the road is Kolob Lake. In addition to the amazing water, it was about 20 degrees here than in Springdale the day we visited!
The Best Cheap Hotels In Zion National Park , United States Of America
There are public parks around the lake, but most were open on the day we visited. There are also boat launches and kayak, canoe and boat rentals. A beautiful place to spend the day!
Tip: There are no phones at the lake, so I recommend calling to schedule a boat, boat, or cruise before renting!

The good news is that all trails in Dixie are friendly!
