Surrounded by four of the five great lakes, the state’s most magnificent lakes, tall forests, dramatic cliffs and towering sandstones are revealed in every direction. The scene is matched only by the many small towns in Michigan that offer a welcome, and cities that spark the imagination. With so many sights and sounds on earth, a pet friendly trip to Michigan will set you up for all your future adventures.
Michigan is at its most beautiful in the fall, when the temperatures begin to drop and the trees begin to change color. If your trip is for fall foliage, the show starts in September in the southern part of the state, but several weeks earlier in the Upper Peninsula. Summer is another great time for a beach-friendly trip to Michigan — especially if you love the water. With days high in the cool 80s, the weather is perfect for enjoying the state’s many beaches and waterfronts. Naturally, however, the hotel is more difficult during the summer and fall. The hotel is better in the winter and spring, but the winters in Michigan are hard, and the springs are wet and muggy.
Take a cruise to Mackinac Island, where cars are not allowed, but you and your pet will have no trouble! Just steps from the main docks, shuttles are available for people and pets, and bicycles and pet trailers can be rented – all Mackinac attractions.

We are sorry, we could not find any friendly lists in our database. But we have pet-friendly options! Do you know who is here? Let’s find out. Located at the tip of Michigan’s foothills, Port Austin is one of the lesser known gems in the entire state, and it’s also really dog friendly! With more than 3 miles of sandy beaches located in nearby Port Crescent State Park, you can spend your days in the clear blue waters, or hike more than 18 miles of forested trails that lead above the sand to the water with stunning views.
Traveling With Pets
Dogs are allowed on a section of beach available near the entrance to the Pinbog River, accessible by an iron bridge that connects to the nearby hiking trail. Take care to stay on track and it’s important to remember to clean up after your pet too!
One of our favorite dog-friendly patios, Pak’s Backyard, is also in Port Austin! They have Michigan beer, great bar food, and a great atmosphere. They often have live music so you can drink your dinner and water with your packs on a long day at the beach!
A few hours down the shore of Lake Huron, one of our stops, Tawas Point! This is the only dog beach in Michigan that is actually surrounded by barbed wire, where dogs can go off leash freely in a designated area. The campground is also dog friendly, so you can bring your dog for a weekend of summer fun!
Another great stop is the Beer Company Boathouse & Brewery where you can dine on the patio with your care. Tawas is located in the center of town, they have great food and drink, and they are right across the street from another small park that is also dog friendly!

Once there, you can explore more than 70 miles of trails and viewpoints, dine at one of the many dog-friendly local restaurants, and even explore historic Fort Holmes with your dog. Many stores in town also allow four-legged visitors – look for the “Dogs Welcome” sign!
Mackinac Island also has three dog-friendly hotels, including Park Place Suites, Sunset Condos, and our favorite, Mission Point Resort, which also has a large dog patio!
Barley overlooks the Mackinac Bridge and faces the mural across the street from Pak’s backyard.
Home to the famous Rockies National Park, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Manistee is another gem of Northern Michigan, and so you can bring your dogs! There are several areas that allow dogs in the park, including Sand Point Beach, Munising Falls Trail, Miner’s Falls Trail, Miner’s Beach, Lake Superior Overlook and Beach, and Sable Falls Trail and Beach.

While the Northern Regional Scenic Trail and all campgrounds/campgrounds are unfortunately closed, all three campgrounds in the drive area, Little Beaver Lake, Twelfth Beach, and Storm River Campground allow dogs.
Marquette, also located on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is one of my favorite places in the world, and is definitely a place to put on your bucket list to explore with your dog. Nestled along the shores of Lake Superior with its rolling hills and stunning views, many hidden gems can be found.
When we visit, we stay at the Staybridge Inn & Suites, downtown. The rooms are large with pet-friendly amenities, and dogs love Lego for a change from the usual camping adventures. Staybridge Inn and Suites is a good hotel chain to keep an eye on in other towns we’ve stayed at
