One of Britain’s most picturesque landscapes, the Lake District is a paradise for outdoor activities, with hundreds of opportunities for dogs (and their owners) to take short walks, longer walks and challenging hikes. Most of the paths between the villages are easy to walk and your pets are unlikely to strain during their visit.

Just outside the market town of Keswick, Mire House Farm has a range of shepherd’s huts and grounds overlooking the Northern Fells. Yorkshire is another county perfect for a family break with dogs, with unspoilt countryside and seaside towns offering owners plenty of options to fill their days. Whitby is one such town, located on the coast but only a few miles from the boundary of the North York Moors National Park, so you can choose between a walk in the countryside or a run on the sand and sea.

Egton Estate is set amongst the moors and spans 6,000 acres of unspoilt countryside. With acres of bogs and miles of river running through the property, it’s a great place for a (well-behaved) dog to play with the owner’s rescue dogs (as well as sample a selection of organic treats).

But if you really want to immerse yourself in the wilderness with your dog, stay at the Mount Freedom cabins. Set amongst the hills and overlooking the cliffs of Carrick Beach, the three cottages offer a relaxing retreat with panoramic views of the Isle of Arran. Dogs will enjoy the space to run, whether on the nearby beaches or woodlands, and they can sit down for a meal with you at The Anchorage, a nearby pub in the village of Dunure. When it’s time to wind down, they’ll be just as grateful for the fireplace as you are (though they probably won’t appreciate the hot tub or the view as much).
