We brainstormed a travel bucket list and came up with this trip with a Lincoln wish list. If you are looking for dog travel ideas because you have a dog that wants to do everything during the trip, this is for you!
Lincoln takes you on this journey to New England because the temperatures are high in the summer and fall, the outdoor activities are plentiful, and here you’ll find one of America’s most popular dog parks.

This trip is similar to Bad Bad: The 10-Day NE Trip, but with a stopover and the idea to bring your toy!
During the summer, enjoy longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you can find in many other countries this time of year. Or take a fall trip to take advantage of the amazing fall foliage at one of the best places in the world to see leaves.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and England during the 2022 travel year. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long week camping on Shodik Island in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in the middle and later August, one month in Kempton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth. , ME in early October, and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip).
It’s definitely not the time to be in New England these months. Sure, the summer months can get hot at night, but make sure your rental includes air conditioning, and you’ll be fine. . maybe it’s low, ha!

However, we will say that if you want to plan your trip for the best fall foliage, you should plan your trip for the second week of October. Even though the popular leaf spots will be busy (ie Kancamagus Road and Stow, VT), the decision will be worth it!
RTL News: Do you spend a lot of time walking or in the water on your way? Visit in July or August. Will you be drinking with hot apple cider in your hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer people? Visit in September.
We can definitely push Lincohi as a travel fan because it means it’s easy to get into. If you’ve driven enough for a while on the road, this is what we recommend. Drive to the nearest point through this route and make a complete loop to return home.
However, if you can’t get here by car and have a dog that can handle the plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and rent a car upon landing. If you are flying in, we recommend re-routing from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia Park > Portland > Boston.

For Stowe, check out Smugglers Notch State Park Campground or downtown Stowe. (You can also check it out about 40 minutes away in Burlington. Downtown Burlington is incredibly dog friendly!)

Lincoln (the town, not to be confused with our dog’s namesake) is located in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This is what makes it a great place to start a dog.

You could spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire alone because there are tons of dog-friendly hikes and activities nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t get everything done on our list!)
But since we only have one day to enjoy the white mountains on this trip, here are our recommendations for the best things to do.

Kankamagus Road is a 34-mile drive between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. This is one of the most popular drives in New Hampshire and one of the first in America to see fall foliage. Although there are many overlooks and routes through this natural area that can make you very busy during your trip, we recommend that you only stop at some of the sights and do not travel during this activity. (We’d better be sure next time!) Note: visitors by chance? When flying, the driver packs quickly, or drives the night before, or calls the police early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic on the way to the destination. Cancamagus is a great trail, but it’s definitely not your day job!
We’ll get you and your dog out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was the activity that kept us busy during our month in New Hampshire. We researched every weekend and most nights. Spending extra time on the trail is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can find our New Hampshire tour here, but if you want our top recommendations, we recommend going to Welch-Dickie Mountain. This 4.4 mile hike is a wonderful half day hike through the expansive mountains. It’s a dog walk, great exercise and great fun if you enjoy a variety of terrain including open hills and forest trails.

Walsh and Dickey Hill. We recommend walking around the clock to climb the difficult sections. (Especially if it is wet or when you visit the trees during defoliation, when the leaves are down, this is important. Take your time; the place can be slippery).
A dog? of course. Everything about this trip is Lincoln (the dog) happy! We only know that the higher parts of this hike are bare rock.
