Ms Lim is among a small group of pet owners in Singapore who are wary of vaccinating their pets.

On November 18, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) of the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Singapore Veterinary Association jointly released vaccination guidelines for domesticated dogs and cats.

The Singapore Dog and Cat Vaccination Guidelines 2020 lists various core and non-core vaccines and provides recommendations for pets at different life stages and in different living environments, including single or multi-pet households and animal shelters.

ACP and the Singapore Veterinary Association said: “These guidelines will improve the awareness and understanding of various stakeholders, including pet owners, animal welfare groups and pet companies, on the importance of vaccinating animals.”

She has also met other pet owners who no longer feel the need to vaccinate their dogs, especially as they get older.

Another animal owner, who gives her name as Ms Virg, 51, also believes it is “really unnecessary to vaccinate farm animals”. The business agent has been working as a dog rescuer for almost 10 years.

She would rather use alternative methods to keep her 12-year-old dog healthy, such as giving him probiotics and rice water to treat diarrhea, rather than take him to the clinic.

“It’s just what suits us and works,” she said. “It works for us, but it may not work for other people.”

She said most people want puppy vaccinations but may not be willing to get vaccinated annually.

“Or they say their dog doesn’t really go outside, and then they never vaccinate the dogs for many years,” she added.

Dr. Liang Xutian, who has been a veterinarian for 12 years, said she has not met many pet owners who resist vaccination.

However, some may develop negative feelings about vaccinations if their pet develops a sterile abscess – a lump at the injection site – after a previous vaccination.

With the latest guidelines from the authorities, Dr. Chua of The Housecall Vet SG said these will help veterinarians explain the importance of vaccinations, especially to clients who are wary of vaccinations or believe veterinarians promote annual vaccinations to make money.

Pet owners who have misunderstandings can refer to the guidelines and ask their veterinarians for more information, she said.

“At least it’s a proper official information sheet,” she said. “I don’t want them to go online and Google all these diseases (and prevention methods). We really don’t know where they’re going to go to get the information they need.”
