Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane – Although the beaches around Brisbane aren’t as great as those on the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast, there are still quite a few dog-friendly beaches in Queensland’s capital to choose from to have fun with your pooch. .
There are nine off-leash dog beaches along the Moreton Bay, Brisbane City and Redlands Coast coastlines. In addition, there are four other open beaches on nearby islands that are worth the extra effort to reach.
Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane
There are five dog-friendly beaches in the Moreton Bay area, north-east of Brisbane. Drive across the bridge to Bribie Island and its beautiful beach or choose from four beaches along the shores of Moreton Bay.
The Best Queensland Island For Camping With Your Dog And More Dog Friendly Islands
Probably the best off-leash dog beach near Brisbane is South Woorim Beach or Bribie Island Dog Beach. The open stretch of this beautiful golden sand stretches for more than 4 km between Woorim Beach and Coch Beach. And unlike other islands near Brisbane, Bribie Island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so it’s easy to get to.
To access the open area of South Woorim Beach, it is easiest to go to the end of Lowry St in Woorim. Dogs are allowed on a lead on the right hand side of the entry point, next to the sand pumping station. The beach is technically a ‘surf beach’ but the surf only reached 30cm on the day I visited. There is also a convenient dog wash area next to the entry point.
Alternatively, go to Traeth Coch to reach the dog beach. The waters of Traeth Coch are more sheltered and calm. From the first car park, there are initially several hundred meters of rope-only beach, before the start of the rope-free beach section, which is clearly marked.
On Bribie Island, there are also two off-leash dog beaches. At the north end of Woorim Beach, north of the main dog-free section, dogs are allowed off-leash from the entrance at the north end of North Street, going north to the 4WD access point. Additionally, in Bellara, dogs are allowed on a lead on the beach near Sylvan Beach Esplanade between Boronia Drive and Marina Boulevard.

If you turn south from the Bribie Island access road you will come to the quiet suburb of Beachmere. There are two open beaches at Beachmere, at the north and south ends of the long stretch of beach. Both beaches are tidal mud flats, best visited at low tide.
We visited De Beachmere, which is marked as “Beachmere Offleash Dog Beach” on Google Maps. The non-stop exercise area starts at the end of Biggs Avenue and continues to the mouth of the Caboolture River, although dogs are not allowed in the mangrove area. Adjacent to the car park is also a convenient grassy park, which is convenient for tidal visits.
Going north, dogs are still allowed on the beach but must remain on a lead until you reach the Beachmere North off-leash exercise area. It is located between the end of Louise Drive and the northern end of Bayside Drive.
Heading south, the next open beach in the Moreton Bay District Council area is Deception Bay Foreshore. Like Beachmere North and South, this dog beach is also a tidal mud flat, best visited at low tide.
Queens Beach North In Scarborough: Best Dog Beach In Brisbane!
The off-leash dog beach section is between Wallin Avenue and Joseph Crescent, or search for “Deception Bay Dog Beach” on Google Maps. At the time of my visit there was also a test run on the coast road, but only before 8 am and after 4 pm.
After Woorim South Beach, Queens Beach North is probably the next best off-leash dog beach in Brisbane’s north. This dog-friendly beach is located in the suburb of Scarborough, near Redcliffe.
Dogs are allowed off-leash on Queen’s Beach north of the steps near Griffith Street. On the southern half of the beach they must stay on a rope. On busy days it’s easy to pick the boundary based on the number of dogs at the north end!
Instead of mud flats like most beaches in Moreton Bay, Queen’s Beach is instead a sandy beach. It is also rocky around low tide.
Dog Friendly Beaches And Swimming Holes In Brisbane
Brisbane City’s foreshore is currently home to three off-leash dog beaches. For maps of each area, as well as any updates on off-leash areas, see the Brisbane City Council website.
The most northerly dog friendly beach in the Brisbane area is Sandgate Beach. A huge stretch of moorland in the suburbs of Sandgate and Horncliffe has been designated as an off-leash dog training area.
The northern end of the off-leash dog beach starts near the corner of Flinders Parade and Second Avenue. The southern boundary is near the corner of Park Parade and Zeehan Street in Shoncliffe. There are many steps to get down to the mud flats.
Just north of Brisbane Airport is the seaside suburb of Nudgee Beach, home to the Kedron Brook off-leash swimming area. The off-leash area is next to the gated Tuckeroo Dog Park – search for “Nudgee Beach Dog Park” on Google Maps.
Dog Friendly Walks In Brisbane
Nant Kedron is very popular with local dog owners. On the Sunday afternoon we visited there was even a combined coffee and dog van doing business in the car park. Again, the beach is mostly mud – don’t wear new shoes! The rope-free section extends to the mouth of the inlet and is tidal, so it is best to visit at higher tide.
Please note that the nearby off-leash dog area on Nudgee Beach itself which was trialled has been cancelled, with no plans to reinstate it.
The last dog beach in Brisbane city center is Manly Dog Beach, located on the south side of Brisbane Airport. This dog beach is quite small, it is best visited at low tide when it is bigger, but with sandy sand instead of mud.
The beach is near Manly Boat Harbour, between the cliffs at the end of Davenport Drive, which runs along the southern side of the boat harbour. On Google Maps, search for “Inspiration Point” in Manly.

In the Redland City Council area, there are only two off-leash dog beaches on the mainland. However, there are also three other great dog beaches on the islands off the coast.
The two off-leash dog beaches on the Redlands Coast mainland are located in suburban Cleveland. My favorite option is the dog beach at Raby Bay Promontory Park, with its sandy beach.
To find the part of the beach next to the park where dogs are allowed to paddle off-leash, search for “Raby Bay Dog Beach” on Google or follow the signs. The dog beach isn’t that big, so it can get crowded on busy days, but it’s still a decent size.
Another place to swim with your dog in Cleveland is GJ Walter Park. This large fenced dog park is on the other side of Cleveland Point. The easiest access point is on the north side, where there is parking at the end of Shore Street East, rather than on the south side near the ferry terminal.
Pet Travel Faqs
While GJ Walter Park certainly has beach access, it’s not great when it comes to dog beaches. The walled park is surrounded by mangroves on one side, with some access to the beach between the mangroves.
For more dog-friendly beaches along the Redland coast, head offshore to one of the islands. The easiest option to visit is Coochiemudlo Island, which is a 10-minute ferry ride from Victoria Point on the Amity Trader. Dogs are allowed on board, no extra charge, no muzzle required.
Once you arrive at the jetty on Coochiemudlo Island, it’s a 5 minute walk to the seasonal Main Beach, which is west of the jetty. It is best to walk along the path behind the beach, with dogs banned from the sand on either side of the jetty. Once you reach the boat ramp, the rope-free section starts about 100 meters further on, stretching about 200 meters along the beautiful sandy beach, with the boundaries clearly marked.
Please note that depending on the time of year, dogs may be allowed off-leash or restricted to being on a lead. During the winter months, from May to August, dogs are allowed on a lead all day. From November to February, dogs are allowed on a lead after 5pm. and before 9 a.m. However, during the spring and fall, dogs must be on a lead during the day due to the presence of migratory birds.
North Shore Dog Beach
Further south of Coochiemudlo Island is Russell Island, the largest of the southern islands of Moreton Bay. It is also home to a seasonal non-stop dog beach near Parc Llewod Boulevard on the south-east side of the island.
Like the dog beach on Coochiemudlo Island, the dog beach is only open at certain times of the year. Between May and August, dogs are allowed on a lead all day, while during the summer months between November and February, dogs are only allowed on a lead before 9am. or after 5 p.m.
During the remaining months of the year (March, April, September, October), dogs are only allowed on a lead, due to the presence of migratory seabirds.
