Dog Friendly Vacations In Illinois – This article is part of The Ultimate Pet Friendly Road Trip series, our 10-month, 15,000-mile tour of pet-friendly destinations in each of the lower 48 states .
The city of Chicago was officially incorporated in 1833, but is currently the third largest city in the United States, as declared in 1909 by Daniel H. Burnham and Edward H. Bennett. In addition to commercial areas, residential areas, highways and canals, these inspired gentlemen envisioned an elaborate system of parks along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Aaron Montgomery Ward, a Chicago mail order businessman, adopted their plan. Ward led a 20-year battle to force the city to maintain lakefront parks for public use, charging that new construction encroached on the protected area. In 1897, his efforts were rewarded when the Illinois Supreme Court finally settled the case – and we all benefited!
Dog Friendly Chicago
Currently, the Lakefront Trail is 18 miles long along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, connecting healthy areas, parks, famous beaches and famous landmarks such as Navy Pier, Buckingham Fountain and Soldier Field.
Exploring the entire Lakefront Trail on foot was too difficult for us, so we opted to find the popular section between Navy Pier and Lincoln Park. Our plan was to start a little further south and visit Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park and Millennium Park, but the whole area was closed for a big music festival.
The skies were overcast and the temperatures cold when we visited in late July, confirming Chicago’s unpredictable weather and keeping the crowds at bay. Yet the city has a strong vibe, and a walk along the lakefront allows you to feel the hustle and bustle of Chicago on one side and the deep silence of Lake Michigan on the other.
Navy Pier is the Midwest’s premier amusement park and Chicago’s top tourist attraction – and it’s easy to see why! There is something for everyone, with fifty acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and show facilities…not to mention the skyline and lake. You can eat, take a boat trip on the lake, take a water taxi to another part of town, swim in a fountain, enjoy one of the free events, or sit back and people watch.

Pets are welcome along the lakefront boardwalk and outside Navy Pier, South Promenade, park and restaurant patios (just ask in advance). Sightseeing cruises and water taxis also allow pets on their tours.
Lakefront Pet Policy and Navy Pier Pet waste must be picked up and disposed of properly. Pets are welcome on the Navy Pier South Promenade, parks and select restaurants. Pets are welcome to join you on the beach and water tours. Pet taxis are prohibited on the beach along the Lakefront Trail or inside the Navy Pier buildings
Heading north on Lakefront Road from Navy Pier, you’ll come to Milton L. Olive III which leads to the park, named after the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. It’s a quiet place to relax, enjoy the view and feel the grass between your toes.
Just around the corner from Ohio Street Beach is a great place to stop for lunch or a drink. Although pets are not allowed on the beach, they are welcome at Café Oliva!

Continuing north you will reach Oak Street Beach. Also, pets are not allowed on the beach, but if you want to walk down the Magnificent Mile, there is a path that connects the Lakefront Trail to Michigan Avenue.
Further down the road you’ll find Lincoln Park, one of Chicago’s most popular outdoor spaces. There are trails to explore, gardens to admire, a free petting zoo (sorry, no animals at the petting zoo), and plenty of space to spread out your picnic blanket . If you’ve just arrived and need to refill your tank, stop in for lunch, dinner, or the weekly brunch at the pet-friendly Café Brauer. And don’t forget the dessert at the ice cream parlor!
For dogs that really want to play in the lake, head north on the Lakefront Trail, about 3.5 miles from Montrose Dog Beach. Before you leave, you’ll need to get a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) tag for your dog. These tags are only available at participating Chicagoland veterinary offices and are required for all dogs using dog parks or beaches.
To receive a tag, you will need to schedule an office visit and provide the following information: proof that your dog is vaccinated against rabies, has been tested for infectious diseases within the past year, including stool testing for internal parasites, and distemper, hepatitis, current vaccinations or titers for para-flu, parvovirus and Bordatella (kennel cough). Fees for using an unregistered DFA range from $250 to $500.
