The restrictions below do not apply to guide dogs trained to assist people with disabilities.

Wild horses also live in the outer shores of the north. If your dog is curious about large creatures, breaking the leash rules can be dangerous.

Learn about the first British settlement at the Fort Raleigh Historic Site. Explore the beautiful Elizabethan garden while you’re there. There is a small entrance fee for the garden and the dogs.

While on the island, the Victorian town of Mandeo is a lovely place to stop for lunch. Lost Colony Brewery and the luxurious Avenue Waterfront Grill both have pet-friendly patios.

The restaurant is a short walk from the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. The current building is a replica of some of the area’s unusual spiral traffic lights. You can roam freely, but your pet must wait outside.

Another interesting dog-friendly Outer Banks location is the Wright Brothers National Monument. Markers indicate where the most famous 12-second flight in history began and ended.
