Dog Friendly Vacations Maryland – This post is part of the Best Pet Friendly Road Trip series, our 10-month, 15-mile road trip of the best pet-friendly destinations in each of the 48 states.
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest bay in North America, about 200 miles from where the Susquehanna River ends its journey from Havre de Grace, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia, where the bay empties into the Atlantic. With more than 11,000 miles of coastline—more than the entire West Coast—it’s a great way to enjoy the beach. But to better appreciate its scale, you can see it from a boat!
Dog Friendly Vacations Maryland
Finding a dog-friendly Chesapeake Bay boat trip isn’t as difficult as you might expect. Watermark Cruises in Annapolis and Baltimore welcome pets on day cruises. Well behaved dogs are allowed on Patriot cruises. They should sit on your lap or lie on your feet, without blocking the way during their journey described from St. Michaels. Additionally, countless private boat operators are available from docks up and down the Chesapeake.
Doggin’ The Chesapeake Bay — Hike With Your Dog
There are a few things to consider when choosing the best option for you and your dog: whether you want a narrated sightseeing tour or just a relaxing trip, whether your pet will be comfortable on board, a large boat with comfort. (low tide) is required for a small boat depending on how full the boat can be, whether the route and timing of transfers with people and possibly other dogs is important to you.
It describes the trip from Annapolis and the preparations for Buster’s birthday. Unfortunately we were reminded that the boats can be unpredictable if the trip we chose is cancelled! Flexibility is important when traveling with pets, so we quickly settled on another option, a day trip across the bay from Annapolis to the small town of St. Louis. Michaels. Saturday morning we boarded the 65-foot Lady Sarah in Annapolis with about 140 people and a pug named Joe.
On this cruise, pets were allowed on both the open upper deck and the enclosed lower deck. We decided to sit outside and chose a seat in the front corner of the boat, where the boys would not step under the feet of any passengers. Buster was excited about our big day, but once the engines started and we took off, it didn’t take long for all the boys to fall asleep!
The boat trip across the Chesapeake took just over two hours and along the way we enjoyed a view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the sun on the water with many other boats. Even from this perspective, the 18 liters of water in the Persian Gulf—enough to fill 50 billion bathtubs—is unimaginable.
Top 4: Dog Friendly Hotels In Saint Michaels, Maryland(md), United States In 2024
We entered the port of St. Michaels around 12:30pm and we had three hours to explore before heading back. We believe that we were in St. Michaels last year because three hours is not enough time to scratch here! After a 2+ hour nap, Ty and Buster were ready to stretch their legs, so we wandered around the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and then headed out for a walk along the St. Mykhailo nature trail.
Before we knew it, it was time to get back on the boat! Ty and Buster suggest a ride home, but when that idea meets the name Captain of the Day. The boys quickly returned to their carefree lives to take another nap under our table.
Our return trip took us to Thomas Point Shoal Light and brought us to some beautiful boats.
Although we all enjoyed our day, there are a few things I would do differently next time. First, I would like to talk about a tour that would teach us about the Chesapeake Bay while we had fun. In addition, when we pray to St. Michaels, on the busiest weekend of the season. Finding pet-friendly stores or restaurants with a patio — especially with our competitive dogs — is even harder when it’s crowded. If I were planning this day again, I would go to St. Michaels and I take one of Patriot Cruises’ 65-75 minute guided Chesapeake cruises this weekend. Hope what we learned helps make your day perfect!
