The Cartwheel Inn in Whitsbury is a meeting place in more ways than one. Mainly, this watering hole welcomes walkers and their four-legged friends after wandering around the New Forest. Located where Hampshire meets Dorset and Wiltshire, the location provides a great meeting place for loved ones and their pets across the neighboring counties.

This strange country gastropub gives the dog free rein in and out, so the whole family can sit together at every meal. Behind the pub you will find Whitsbury Manor Stables where you can see racehorses if you are lucky. Go there with the whole family, but give a miss on Monday and Tuesday as the pub is closed on both days.

Bringing water bowls for the dogs is second nature at The Old Beams Inn. This Ringwood pub even has treats for all good boys and girls. And your treatment? A lovingly designed menu of seasonal food paired with pints from local breweries, set in an 11th century pub right here in the heart of the New Forest.

All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy some much needed relaxation after destroying an entire ancient forest.

George is a great place to visit with the dog on your next trip to the New Forest. Located next to the River Avon that runs through the town, you’ll find a dog-friendly pub with a special dog menu including chicken and dog biscuits. Now that’s what we call a treat!

Located just 15 minutes from Ringwood, the western gateway to the New Forest, Red Shoot is the perfect place for a pub meal before or after your dog walk. We talk about everything from beer battered slaw and chips to Sunday cakes.

Described in their own words as a ‘proper country inn’, what you see is what you get when you visit the New Forest Inn.

The city dates back to the 18th century and its landscape has not changed since then. With ponies, riders and even pigs passing by regularly, you’ll feel right at home when they bring your dog to the water bowl by the bar. Ask one of the bartenders for one of the homemade dog treats if they are particularly good.

To continue with the radio, go behind the pub where you will find a gate with direct access to the forest.

If you want to come again and again, you might even want to consider owning a holiday home in the New Forest with us.

Whether you’re looking for a home from home or just a short break, we can’t wait to welcome you all. This charming country house, managed by Fuller’s, is located in the heart of the New Forest. Formerly known as Holmhurst, it was used as a hospital during the Second World War, but now serves as a stylish pub, restaurant and hotel. The White Buck is very popular with dog owners, whether they are hungry locals coming in for a meal or tired travelers checking in to stay longer.

A lot. We met five dogs during our stay and at least two of them stayed put. Chances are you’ll almost run into a dog as soon as you walk through the front door!

Pets are welcome in selected hotel rooms and a fee of £15 per night is charged to accommodate them. A maximum of two dogs can stay in any room and they will receive bowls and bunnies during their stay. There is also a large jar of dog treats on the bar, which is always a good sign.

The 20 elegant bedrooms are in three different classes – pampering, cozy and charming. We stayed in the Griffin Room – or Room 9 – named after the Fuller Brewery in London. As hotel rooms go, this is seriously impressive. Not only is the room big, but it also has one of the biggest windows I’ve ever seen, overlooking the surrounding garden and forest.

We were able to enjoy the view from the luxurious 6-foot bed, while Ernie preferred the chaise longue, which took him all of five minutes to hug. The room also has a retro telephone and subtle horse print wallpaper that gives it a cozy feel. The wine and beer on the house was also a nice touch and the homemade biscuits (in a White Buck box) were a treat.

The stylish bathroom is also fun to spend time in, with retro lighting, letterbox tiles and trendy wooden shutters. The rooftop bath was lovely and the jungle shower was just what we needed to wake up in the morning. I love the Cole & Lewis toiletries and it’s also nice to have a robe and slippers to slip into.

Tasty I visited in January, when the restaurant tested vegan dishes for vegans, but the menu still had many meat dishes. Overall I would say the food is classic pub fare, sourced locally where possible. Think liver and bacon and a super-sized Sunday roast.

The Royal Oak Beaulieu

Breakfast is also a good deal with a good selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt and pastries. The cooked option has also been given a trendy twist, with smashed avocado on toast alongside traditional full English.

Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, but there are plenty of tables – and water bowls – in the bar area. You can also dine in the cozy armory or in the hall where you will find some comfortable sofas in front of the roaring fire.

There are over 140 miles of paths and trails in the New Forest, so you’ll be spoiled for choice. But note that the dog must be kept in a lead, because free-roaming ponies, donkeys, cows and deer. I really thought we should look for wild animals, but they are everywhere! I even saw a donkey biting someone else’s hedge.

During the winter months there are not many roads in Burleigh (a good 20 minute walk across the sealand from The White Buck). But in summer, you can follow the Burley Food Trail. You can try New Forest cider, handmade fudge and traditional sweets on the 5 mile and 5 mile routes. You can also delve into the village’s spooky past – we count three shops dedicated to magic.

The walk from Beaulieu to Buckler’s Hard, where the ship was once built for Nelson’s fleet, is also beautiful. From the village of Beaulieu, follow the signs to the path that follows the river. It’s about two miles each way. If you need a cup of coffee afterwards, Pallets Tea & Coffee House is pet friendly.

From Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst there are also some good ‘railway’ roads, many of them through moorland. For more travel inspiration, visit the official New Forest website. Alternatively, check out my Ruff’s Guide to the New Forest for more suggestions on dog-friendly things to see and do.
