High Country For Dogs, Victoria, Australia
One of my childhood memories is visiting the historic village of Echuca on the mighty Murray River and taking a boat ride. I managed to come back in 2021 during the shutdown and I brought my dog.
Most of the paddle boats in Echuca allow well-behaved dogs to ride with you, unless they are a floating restaurant. For example, Echuca Paddlesteamers run hour-long tours several times daily on the historic PS Pevensie and PS Alexander Arbuthnot, and pets are welcome on board. When the whistle blows, hold your puppy!
Victoria has many beautiful and historic towns. A good example is Beechworth, three hours north of Melbourne. Beechworth has what is considered to be the finest collection of public houses in all of Victoria, built from the finest local granite.
To get the most out of Beechworth with your dog, we recommend that you purchase a self-guided guide from the Visitor Information Center for a small fee. Then walk the main streets of the city.

While in Beechworth, you may also want to follow the Gorge Scenic Drive, which runs through Beechworth Heritage Park to the north of town. You can walk, or walk all or part of it with your dog. Keep it on a leash.

There are many cycling routes near Bright, including the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, which starts nearby. And if you don’t have your own bike, there are plenty of bike rental shops in town. At least one of them, Electric Bikes, also rents dog trailers, but you can also rent them from other stores if you ask directly. Also check for weight restrictions.

A popular route for beginner cyclists is the Wandiligong circular route, 5.5km from Bright and Home to the Nightingale Bros orchards. Then go for a swim in the Oven River or enjoy a local beer at Bright Brewery.
There are many places in Victoria to see koalas in the wild, but one of the best is Raymond Island in East Gippsland, near the entrance to the lagoon.
To get to Raymond Island, I recommend parking in Paynesville and taking a short ferry ride for free. The Koala Trail starts in front of the boat and the best way to see koalas is on foot.
The main route is 1.2km long, but there are minor variations. To support local volunteers, consider purchasing a brochure at the event center or donating on this website. Always keep your dog on a leash. Even if your dogs are like us, they probably don’t know what’s sleeping in the gum trees!
Where To Go On Winter Road Trips In Victoria
Paddle steamers aren’t the only way to get around for dogs in Victoria, and there are a number of dog-friendly tours available. Near Melbourne, you can ride a vintage train on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, which connects the gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
When choosing your car, make sure you choose ‘Touring Class’. Guide dogs are allowed in first class vehicles only. Educational tours consist of old wooden carriages with family coaches with open windows, perfect for the experience. Dogs can travel for free, but it is at the station master’s discretion to allow dogs to board to ensure good behavior.
For a full day, book a third train trip or a Sunday morning train trip. The former includes a 2.5-hour tour of the old gold mining town of Maldon, while the latter includes a 90-minute stop. (Just a short stop on the Sunday afternoon tour.) For a dog-friendly lunch, visit the Maldon Hotel, which is and beer garden, or eat at the cafe’s outdoor tables.
Castlemaine is a 90 minute drive from Melbourne. Alternatively, you can get all the train experience by taking the V / Line train (if you have a small dog in the carrier, see here).

Malden isn’t the only gold-mining town in Victoria where your dog can enjoy a legendary railway journey. For another historic, dog-friendly tour, head to Walhalla, about 2.5 hours east of Melbourne. But trains (diesels this time) aren’t what attract dogs to Valhalla…
For something a little different, try a long road gold mine tour. Once one of Victoria’s gold mines, today you can take a 50-minute walk through the main road, to an original gold mine and hear lots of interesting stories from your tour guide.
Because the inside of the tunnel was dark and sometimes wet, we took our little dog along for the trip. Decide in advance if you think your dog will be well behaved and happy to join the trip. Advance reservations are recommended due to limited groups.
There is much to see in Valhalla, including exploring the town from below and reading more than 30 signs explaining its history. Dogs on a leash are allowed on the long golden tramline in the high street.
Best Dog Friendly Days Out Around Melbourne
If you are considering driving the Ocean Road with your dog, be warned that it is not dog friendly. Many of the popular roadside attractions, such as the Twelve Apostles Observatory, do not allow dogs. Additionally, many beaches prohibit dogs during the summer months.
But there is more to dogs, and it can be a short or long trip with your child, especially if you are prepared. I recommend reading my guide in advance to find out which places are dog friendly and which are not, and book your accommodation in advance. If possible, visit in the spring or winter when most beaches allow dogs on the sand.
