Here are some of the best places for families looking to get away now that school is out.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, many bloggers discuss the best parks for families.
Whitney Moss, one half of the duo behind the blog Rookie Moms, swears by a cave at Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California. Caves come in all shapes, sizes and colors and offer both moderate and severe travel. Children will also enjoy lifting the giant lava rocks, which are heavy and light due to the air trapped inside them.
However, warns Whitney, this is not a trip for overprotective parents. “It was a tough experience – one that we won’t share with our kids on a rubber pitch,” he said.

Along the coast, a “magical” family experience awaits Val Curtis from Bon Bon Break in Redwood National Park. His children, who were amazed by the tall trees, said that walking among the redwoods made them feel like they were in their fairy tale.
Jeff Bogle of Out With the Kids, one of the many big dads attending the convention, agreed with Val’s choice and planned a few trips to add to the itinerary: a nature trip to nearby Fern Canyon – “the museum after the best old,” he says—on a trip to Gold Bluffs Beach, where he says “the redwoods react in a remarkable way to the raw, unquenchable power of the ocean.”
Across the country, Jessica McFadden recommends Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park as a no-nonsense family trip. An American parenting blogger recently rented a house there and spent the weekend with her children on a trip to the famous Skyline, looking at ‘night and take a trip to the nearby Luray Caverns. His advice: hire a guide to get the most out of the experience.
But for Orange County Mom Blog founder Shelby Barron, nothing compares to America’s first national park. In his opinion, Yellowstone is as good as it gets when it comes to creating a backdrop for the perfect family vacation. His advice: no matter how big the park is, if you want to see everything, get out of the car and explore this amazing place on foot.

“Water” and “family vacation” can also be the same word. Nothing beats a day of sun and surf in the ocean – and the screams of children playing in the sand.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts, offers “a great coastal town with a slow pace, long days, and lots of ice cream,” according to family coach Kathryn Pearlman. He loved the beautiful summer weather (“not too hot, not too cold”), the calm beaches, the photogenic scenery, and satisfying his family with fried oysters.
Chen’s pregnant Amy Morrison says that when she thinks of summer, she thinks of Virginia Beach because it’s hot and reminds her childhood of splashing in the water, eating ice cream and drinking in the salt of the river air.
The Outer Banks may get all the ink when it comes to North Carolina beaches, but Andrea of Just Is a Four Letter Word prefers a short tour of Wrightsville Beach. Some of the highlights: wide beaches, fresh air, and seemingly endless opportunities for beautiful walks in nature.

If you’re looking for a bit of culture when planning a family vacation, there are plenty of options in big cities like the United States.
Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho lures Kimberly Tate into a packed suitcase. She and her husband took the family to an Ironman triathlon and fell in love with City Park, with its local beaches, large playgrounds and summer track series, and the area’s abundance of lakes.
Emilia Salura of Half-Crazy Mama suggests Virginia City, Nevada, a silver boom town in the mid-1800s. Vacationing there, he says, “is like going back to the old western town — the ferry and everything.”
Sarah Hirsch, blogger at Kids Traveled Well, sees the greater San Diego area as a great vacation spot for families because it brings a little bit of everything to the table: beautiful beaches, great buildings parties, the amazing scenery of Coronado Island, nearby. Legoland (only 65 kilometers from Disneyland) has a bright, sunny climate to match its atmosphere. Where else can you see blue whales from a schooner, swim in warm glacial waters, watch the continents fall around you and enjoy the noise of the great European waters, all within a few hours of each other. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. You can look up the Prime Minister in the phone book.
Icelanders understand the special importance of children and families. It is rare to find a hotel without a play area for children.
Plus, traveling to Iceland alone is easy. During the summer, you can drive the entire ring road or just focus on the attractions of the south coast – there are many things to see and do, and with children. Our Experience: We’ve been to Iceland many times throughout the years, and it’s a great place for a family trip! On our blog you can find a great selection of Iceland guides, tours and useful tips. See the Iceland Travel Guide for more details.

Over the past few years, Bali has become one of our favorite family vacations. There’s a great mix of beaches and culture, and there’s always something to do, from going to festivals (which are always happening) to parks to hiking through the rice fields.
The weather is warm throughout the year, but the rainy season (November to March) is exactly what it is. Good and cheap food. The 10 year old favorite restaurant in the world is Coca near Jimbaran Beach.
Hotels in Bali are beautiful and almost all children are welcome. We stayed at beach hotels and villages with private pools overlooking river valleys and villages surrounded by rice fields. We always try to do activities like fishing, anti-gravity yoga, rice planting, pottery and village tours in our hotel. We are never ready to check.
Although there are many tourists every year, Bali does not feel touristy. Ubud maintains a beautiful and artistic atmosphere. Also, there are a lot of monkeys – the kind of child that does not want to be
