Steeped in history and the childhood home of Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln State Park features more than 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills, and two lakes. Dogs are welcome to explore this nature park. You’ll see the Lincoln Boyhood National Monument, a pioneer farm, the Lincoln Cabin, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the Twelve Stones Historic Trail. Want to stay all day? You can camp in this state park! Great for a night out.
If the covered bridges remind you of the famous movie, then you know why Iowa County is so unique and worth the trip. Your dog will be happy to join you on the many covered bridges in this area of Iowa. Madison County is the covered bridge capital of Iowa. The county has the largest group of covered bridges in one area! Since many of the bridges are accessible via dirt roads, leave the RV back at the campground while you explore.
In more than six years of traveling in RVs with my pets, the one place that stands out to me the most is the paws of the Chalk Pyramids in Kansas. Many travelers don’t know about this destination, but now the secret is out! Monument Rocks is located on the west coast of Gove County, Kansas. It is a series of large chalk monoliths known as the Chalk Pyramids. Dogs are allowed on a leash and you feel like you’re on another planet. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Being from Florida, we love being at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with Brickle and Digby, I now understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features miles of sandy beaches and cliffs that tower over Lake Michigan. As with many areas, some beaches do not allow dogs, so ask the friendly park staff, get a map, or check online. We found that Brickle and Digby had more places to go than we expected on this picturesque lakeside. But remember, for safety reasons, dogs are not allowed on the dunes.
Your dog will feel as high as Paul Bunyan when you take him to Bemidji, Minnesota! This was a very fun stop for us on our travels. Check out the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe The Blue Ox for a spectacular photo opportunity. This roadside attraction has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Built in 1937, Paul Bunyan and Blue Ox Babe are located on the shores of Lake Bemidji near the tourist information center. After getting the best pictures ever of your poo, head to nearby dog-friendly Itasca State Park. Here you can see the source of the Mississippi River, hike and have a picnic!
Named after the park’s large sandstone cave, Indian Cave State Park is bordered by the mighty Missouri River. Your dog will thank you for taking him here to camp, picnic and hike the 22 miles of trails! Indian Cave is the main geological feature of the park and features prehistoric Indian petroglyphs! Be sure to keep your dog on a leash and clean up after yourself to preserve this beautiful place.
We usually stay away from big cities on our RV trips because our dogs are old. But we found Missouri’s Gateway Arch National Park to strike a great balance between urban and quaint. The two iconic buildings in the 91-hectare park will take your breath away. Your dog will enjoy walking on the green grass and in the park, watching the horses and carriages and having a picnic. Leashed dogs can explore the park and walk along the riverside path.

Near the border village, visit this special place to take a picture. You just can’t resist!
The park is a beautiful haven for native plants and wildlife, and your dog will enjoy exploring over 100 miles of trails in the national park with you. Why is Cuyahoga Valley National Park close to my heart? There is a winery in the park! Yes, a dog-friendly winery! After hiking and exploring, sit with your dog under the trees at Sarah’s Vineyard. As with any park, check national park pet restrictions before visiting.
Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park and wildlife refuge in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Custer State Park is famous for its bison herds, scenic attractions, historic sites, resorts and campgrounds. Due to the abundance of wildlife within the park, it has been ranked among the top ten wildlife destinations in the world. Just 25 miles from Custer, the state park is huge and inspiring!
I still remember the way Digby looked at me as we stood on Messenger Islands Lake. The wind was blowing, the sun was shining and all was well in our world of travel.
