Best Dog Friendly Beaches Kent – Living in London, we’re lucky to be able to easily escape the capital and be on the beach with plenty of dog-friendly beaches within an hour or two. Last summer we had a great time exploring the best dog-friendly beaches in West Sussex, but today on the blog we’re sharing three dog-friendly sandy beaches between Margate and Broadstairs in North East Kent that you can visit with your pooch. away, so no worries about the May-September dog beach ban.
The interesting thing is that the beaches we will talk about are not far from each other, so if you travel by car, you can visit them all in one day. Close to the sea are the towns of Margate and Broadstairs, which are fun for dogs to explore – more on that in a moment.
Best Dog Friendly Beaches Kent
All the beaches we visited were sandy so we enjoyed them at low tide. Check tide times at Tideschart.com to get the most out of your visit
Dog Friendly Beaches In Sussex
Palm Bay Beach is the closest year-round dog-friendly beach to Margate if you want to combine both tours. When we first arrived in Palm Bay, it wasn’t immediately clear how you would get down to the beach from the main road, but once you find your way among the rocks, the beach is yours. On the beach, there is plenty of sand for one or more of the happy greyhounds we saw to sniff and zoom about.
Street parking is free and there is a jet ski cafe at the end of the beach which is dog friendly.
About a ten minute drive along the coast between Margate and Broadstairs you’ll find Kingsgate Bay, famous for its white chalk cliffs, sea caves and Kingsgate Bay Arch House. The tide was still very high when we visited, so we couldn’t go over the arch, but it was still a great beach to visit.
Unfortunately, there is no parking at Kingsgate Bay and the beach gate is like a blink and you’ll miss it. The only quick parking option is at Captain Digby’s (dogs are only allowed in the beer garden). Apparently, if you don’t eat there once, it will set you back 20 pounds.
Dog Friendly Beaches Tahoe City, Ca
You can drive along the famous Joss Bay surf beach which has a great car park and then take a short walk to Kingsgate Bay. 15 minutes Note that dogs are only allowed at Joss Bay Beach before 10:00 and after 18:00 between 1 May and 30 September.
Another dog-friendly option is the Botany Bay Hotel, a 10-minute walk from Kingsgate Beach. If you’re staying overnight, dogs are welcome in the bar area and there are dog-friendly hotel rooms.
Last but certainly not least, Dumpton Gap was the closest beach to Broadstairs on our list – in fact, you could walk from Dumpton Gap to Broadstairs in 15 minutes if you wanted to. Dumpton Gap was definitely our favorite sight of the day. Make sure you visit when the tide is out and you can walk along the beach with nothing but sand, sea and a backdrop of visible white mountains.
Parking was easy, with plenty of street parking at the beach entrance. Although it wasn’t open when we visited, Sam’s Cafe, facing the sand at the entrance to the beach, has a reputation for welcoming people and puppies.
Dog Friendly Margate, Broadstairs And Ramsgate
When we visited recently, there weren’t many opportunities in Margate and Broadstairs due to quarantine, so a dog-friendly city guide should be an issue for the future. However, here are two dogs that must be mentioned if you are in the area…
One of our favorite children’s accessories brands in Old Town Margate is Hero + Wolf and their sister brand, Artisans & Adventures. A visit to Margate with her four-legged friend, known for their colorful and ethical pieces and amazing hands-free illustrations, wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Hero + Wolf. If you do, you’ll be warmly greeted by Wolfie with the hero’s brand name, and in Wolfie’s case, if you bring him treats, you’ll be a lifelong friend.
A cruise is not the same without ice cream. Luckily at Morelli’s Gelato in Broadstairs by the Sea you can find both a human version and a puppy version, delightful considering how quickly the latter was eaten. Morelli’s gelato is also generally dog-friendly, but during the COVID-19 restrictions, you can take your Morelli’s treats (along with other dogs and people).
With dog-friendly beaches and dog-friendly glaciers ticked off all the lists, we ended the day on a happy note by deciding to check out this little corner of the Kent coast. As a South London resident, although these dog-friendly beaches in Kent may not be as close to us as the dog-friendly beaches in West Sussex, they are definitely worth a visit.
Dog Friendly Beaches In Kent
Palm Bay, Kingsgate Bay and Dumpton Gap are certainly not the only dog-friendly beaches in the area, but they are probably the most popular. If you want to explore the nearest dog-friendly beach, here are some resources to help you plan your route:
By Car: If you want to go to the beach, a car is a must for those with dogs like Belenia. Apart from Kingsgate Bay where parking was difficult, you can park almost anywhere apart from the main towns along the beach. Metered parking is also easy to find at Broadstairs near Morelli.
By public transport: South East High Speed services from St Pancras take around 1 hour 30 minutes to Margate or 1 hour 40 minutes to Broadstairs. There is also a stopping service from Victoria (a convenient option for those living in South London) which takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to Margate or 1 hour 50 minutes to Broadstairs.
Local Transport: If you want to explore and need a break, there is a regular local bus service that follows the coastal road.

If you want a nice beach that isn’t too crowded, Dumpton Gap is a great place for a beach walk. Even in the height of summer it is much quieter than the nearby city center beaches. At low tide you can walk from Ramsgate to Broadstairs by following the chalk cliffs in either direction. The walk takes about half an hour. If you don’t want to get your feet wet, there is a wide promenade that runs from the beach to Louisa Bay. During the summer, the cafe and toilets are open and there are beach huts for rent.
Once known as “Britain’s only desert”, Dungeness is a remarkable landscape with the largest shingle area in Europe. Includes Dungeness Nuclear Power Station, Dungeness Village and environmental sites. The flooded gravel pits and shingle beaches are home to a variety of wildlife and over 600 plant species. Dogs can explore the beach and even ride the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway for free. See Dungeness photos from my last trip.
This isolated sand castle is surrounded by white chalk cliffs. It has some of the best sea caves in the country and many coves to explore. Although popular, there are no facilities here, meaning it’s generally quieter than nearby Joss Bay and Botany Bay beaches. At low tide, the sand is exposed, providing a quiet and secluded beach.
