Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon

Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon – In the heart of the Capricorn Coast, Yeppoon is the perfect dog-friendly beach destination to visit with your pooch. Located 30 minutes from Rockhampton and less than 8 hours north of Brisbane, discover what Yeppoon has to offer when visiting Queensland with a dog.

One of the main attractions of Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast is the many beautiful beaches that stretch south between Yeppoon and Emu Park.

Luckily, the standard rule for local Livingstoneshire beaches is that dogs are allowed on leads on all beaches except before 8am and after 4pm unless otherwise stated. Therefore, almost all the beaches in the region are dog friendly!

In my explorations, I didn’t find any beaches that didn’t allow dogs, although beaches north of Bayfield National Park were definitely off-limits.

At the time of my visit in 2021, the local tourism site stated that dogs were not allowed at Yapon Main Beach, Emu Park Beach and Koi Bay Beach, however I can confirm that Cooee Bay Beach has standard signs allowing dog departure before 8am and after at 16.00, while Yeppoon Main Beach or Emu Park Beach have. With the latter two options, dogs may be allowed on a leash, but stay away from patrolled areas.

There are two beaches with different rules: Farnborough Beach in Bengali and Fisherman’s Beach in Emo Park. At both beaches, dogs are off-leash all day, but not on weekends or holidays, when they are required to be on a leash.

The offshore section of Farnborough is between the Bengali Boat Ramp and Barwells Creek, with easiest access on Hines Avenue, adjacent to 4X4 access. At Praia dos Pescadores, the ropeless section starts 150 meters north of the boat ramp, from which point roped access is permitted.

While crocodiles are rarely a problem in this southern region, marine bites can be a threat during the summer months, and be on the lookout during turtle nesting season, October to March. If there are turtles around, keep your distance and leash your dog or keep them away from the beach.

In addition to visiting local beaches, consider these dog-friendly travel ideas for your Japan vacation…

The most interesting thing about traveling to Japan is going to Great Keppel Island. With its stunning beaches, swimming and snorkeling, it’s a fun day out for the whole family and, luckily, dogs are allowed to tag along.

There are two ferry options for traveling to Great Keppel Island, both of which are dog friendly. We traveled with Keppel Konnecions who allow dogs on board for free. Unlike the magnetic island ferry, our dogs do not need to wear muzzles.

There is also the large Freedom Fast Cats, which charges $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs. Both ferries take 30 minutes and operate at the same time.

Arriving at Great Keppel Island, you will notice that there are no signs on the beach stating whether dogs are allowed or not. However, the island is part of Livingstoneshire, as is Japan, so perhaps the same pattern of dogs leashed on the beach applies here too, except before 8am and after 4pm. Great Keppel Island is not mentioned on their website.

The ferry will take you to the sands of Praia dos Pescadores, the center of the island. I recommend walking to the south end of the beach, where short walks to nearby beaches begin, including Shelving Beach.

Shelving Beach is one of the most popular snorkeling beaches on the island and definitely the easiest to get to if you don’t have your own boat. It takes 5-10 minutes to walk, although the last part of the trail is quite difficult, especially if you are wearing underwear, like us! There are coral sections on both sides of the beach. We prefer the area on the left side, which is easier to reach at low tide.

If you bring your own picnic, I recommend wandering around Shelving Beach, Monkey Beach, and Long Beach. Monkey Beach has better snorkeling spots, but we ran out of time to visit. But we arrived at Long Beach, a beautiful, long and calm beach for swimming. We almost had the beach to ourselves (and probably let our dog off leash). The east end is actually a nude beach, although it was quiet when we visited.

Note that the footpaths around Great Keppel Island are not well maintained, as the main old resort on the island has been closed for many years. It’s probably best to follow the trail that starts at the end of Praia dos Pescadores or ask local staff for directions.

If you take the Keppel Connection ferry to the island, you can enjoy lunch and drinks on the Great Keppel Island Highway. The value was great and our burgers and fries were delicious. However, if you want to spend as much time exploring the island as possible, it’s a long walk to the bistro at the northern end of Praia dos Pescadores.

The bistro on Great Keppel Island Highway is mostly outdoors and dog friendly, with plenty of water bowls. Although I noticed none of the dogs exceeded this limit – I’m not sure which area he was referring to.

Unfortunately, most accommodation on Great Keppel Island does not allow dogs, so it’s usually best to make a day trip. If you want to stay a night or two, research whether the holiday home currently allows dogs.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the area’s beaches without having to set foot in the sand, there are popular walking trails along the Yapon coastline for both humans and dogs. Enjoy your time with the many picnic benches and lounge chairs along the path, not to mention the many beachside cafes that are generally dog friendly.

Dogs must be leashed, plus there are plenty of reminders to pick up after your dog, with plenty of bins and poop bags available. Please note that dogs are not allowed in Yeppoon Lagoon (but walking behind them is permitted) and the Keppel Kraken water recreation area.

Unfortunately, many of the other coastal walks in the area, such as the Bluff Point Scenic Walk and Track to Fan Rock Lookout, are in smaller parts of the Kikeran Coast National Park.

Emo Park is just a 15 minute drive south of Yapon. Besides the large Praia dos Pescadores, it is also home to two historical sites. On the hill above the pier is the Singing Ship Statue, a memorial to Captain Cook erected in 1970. Listen to its sound when the wind blows.

Adjacent to the Singing Ship is the Anzac Memorial Walk. This short, monumental promenade was built to mark the centenary of the First World War and is a moving sight to behold. Underneath the large shelter are information panels about the major battle as well as the involvement of local Queenslanders.

Leashed dogs are permitted on the trails and surrounding parks, although the site is treated with respect.

If you’re interested in history, it’s worth heading inland to Rockhampton. One of the oldest towns in central Queensland, the town is home to an impressive collection of historic buildings.

Some of the main buildings that can be visited are the Customs House, Criterion Hotel, Rockhampton Post Office and several court buildings. Most of the historic buildings are located along the Quay Street riverfront, while the post office and courthouse are within a block of East Street.

The Riverfront area along Quay Street has recently been revitalized and is a lovely place to take a walk along the Fitzroy River, with lots of shady trees. Keep your dog on a leash.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Rockhampton’s main Botanic Gardens, as well as the adjacent free zoo. However, head to Kershaw Gardens in North Rockhampton, where dogs are allowed.

The highlight of the park is the waterfall area, with several man-made waterfalls cascading gracefully into pools below, surrounded by lush palm trees. The waterfall area is closest to the High Street car park.

Unfortunately, some other parts of the park, such as the wetlands, still need to be restored, after the park was badly damaged by the storm.

Dogs are allowed on a leash at Kershaw Gardens. There is an off-leash dog area near the Dowling Street Parking Lot, which we didn’t have time to visit, and the Charles Street Parking Lot has a small, fenced off-leash park with agility equipment.

There is an off-leash dog park, Olive Dory Park, on Clayton Road in Lammermoor in the Yappon area. It has three different fenced areas, one of which has agility equipment. The other two areas have plenty of shade and seating.

If you visit Rockhampton, there are various off-leash dog parks dotted around the town, some of which are fenced in.
