Chance and Kona always take trips to the dog beach. Although there are many great walks where you can take your dog, there are only a few dog-friendly beaches. We love going to the beach and shopping in town. Avenida Del Mar in San Clemente is full of cute shops, and if you keep walking you’ll escape to the beach.

But Dog Beach is a different experience. We always visit one place when we are in town with our dogs. The two places we frequent are Rosie’s Dog Beach or Huntington Dog Beach in Long Beach. A little further south, Del Mar Beach offers dog-friendly areas.
If you’ve never been, I recommend bringing a long leash so your dog can play until you know he won’t swim to Catalina Island! Don’t forget to carry fresh water and extra towels in your car so you can wipe off as much sand as possible after the race!

I’m a San Francisco native who has written numerous blog posts about dog-friendly vacation destinations, including small towns in Northern California. But Southern California has sunny weather, beach towns with warm water (Northern California beaches are very cold and windy), and dog-friendly resorts where hiking, wine tasting, and, of course, good food await you. Dogs are welcome.
Although our Southern California travel was limited compared to our extensive Northern California travel with our dog (Grandpa: 2010-2021, now Gunda), we were able to explore quite a bit of the state south of Santa Barbara while we were there. Many winter vacations a trip to Los Angeles has been a holiday tradition for us.
In that spirit, here are 10 great dog-friendly vacations that can easily be converted into dog-friendly day trips from any major Southern California city. From Los Angeles or San Diego, it’s a 2.5-hour drive one way (traffic permitting).

These include beach towns, small towns, wine tasting, desert retreats, and even famous national parks that you can visit with your dog when you visit Southern California. A) Southern California has warm, sunny California weather almost year-round and the warm water is great for swimming. But summer can be hot, painful for you, and dangerous for your dog (especially for their delicate paws). So if you’re planning a day trip to Southern California with your dog between June and September, choose a coastal city over an inland destination.
November through March is the best time to visit inland destinations like California’s popular winter destinations, Palm Springs, Ohio, and Joshua Tree. However, winter is California’s rainy season, so be sure to shower and be flexible with your plans.
B) If you plan to start your dog friendly trip from Los Angeles or San Diego, it is best to drive your own car. You can rent a car at major airports in Los Angeles, San Diego or Southern California.

Los Angeles is incredibly dog-friendly, but its location puts it close to several dog-friendly spots in Southern California, so if you have some time to spare you should definitely check them out. Another thing is that none of the Los Angeles beaches allow dogs, creating more incentive for dog-friendly day trips from Los Angeles. Based on repeated visits with my grandfather and friends during the winter holidays, here are the places I recommended:
About 30 minutes from Los Angeles, Long Beach is home to Rosie’s Dog Beach, America’s most popular dog beach. Additionally, stores, shops and restaurants in Belmont Shores are dog friendly.
Long Beach has 11 dog parks, including a local favorite, El Dorado Park, Uptown Dog Park, K-9 Corner Dog Park and Bixby Dog Park.
