Friendly people, good food and easy living are what we remember about our time in the Middle East. Our dogs felt at home and relaxed with spacious, open spaces, room to roam and a relaxed lifestyle. We found the Middle East to be very welcoming to dogs and their people.
Although the Midwest region of the United States is mostly flat, it has other landforms that vary in elevation. You can find rolling hills, high mountains, plains, plateaus and large lakes. Along with the natural beauty, you’ll also find some history lessons awaiting you and your dog!

Rich in history and home to Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home, Lincoln State Park features 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills, and two lakes. Dogs are welcome to explore this state park with you. You can visit the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, a pioneer farm, the site of the Lincoln Cabin, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the Twelve Stone Historic Trail. Want to stay all day? You can camp in this state park! It’s great for an overnight stay.
If the covered bridges bring to mind a famous movie, you’ll understand why this state of Iowa is such a special place to visit. Your dog is welcome on many covered bridges in this part of Iowa. Madison County is the covered bridge capital of Iowa. The state has the largest collection of covered bridges in one area! With several bridges accessible by dirt roads, leave the RV back at the campground while you explore.

After over six years of traveling with our pets in our RV, when I think of the one place that amazes me the most, it’s the claws of the chalk pyramids in Kansas. Most tourists don’t know about this destination, but now the secret is out! Monument Rock is located on the western border of Gove County, Kansas. It is a series of large chalk monoliths known as the Chalk Pyramids. Dogs are allowed on a leash and you’ll feel like you’re on another planet. It is a truly unique experience.

Originally from Florida, we love being at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with Brickell and Digby, I can now understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features miles of sandy beaches and towers over Lake Michigan. As with most areas, there are some beaches where dogs are not allowed, so check with friendly park staff, get a map or look online. We found more places to visit in Brickell and Digby on this beautiful lake than we expected. However, note that dogs are not allowed on the hill for safety reasons.
Your dog will be as big as Paul Bunyan when you bring him to Bemidji, Minnesota! This is a fun stop on our journey. Meet the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox for a spectacular photo opportunity. This road attraction has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Built in 1937, Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox Baby stand on the shore of Lake Bemidji near the Visitor Information Center. After getting the best photos of your pooch, head to nearby dog-friendly Itasca State Park. Here you can view the crest of the Mississippi River, hike and picnic!

We usually tend to stay away from big cities on our RV trips because our dogs are seniors. But we found Gateway Arch National Park in Missouri to be the perfect balance of urban and quaint. Two unique structures in this 91-acre park will take your breath away. Your dog will love to walk the green lawns and park areas, watch the horses and carriages go by, and relax with a picnic. Leashed dogs can explore the park and walk along the riverbank.

We love roadside attractions and unique stops, and the dog-friendly Frontier Village really checked all our boxes! The original buildings were brought to this location from the frontier villages of North Dakota. Filled with unique antiques and artifacts, this exhibit is a great way to learn about North Dakota and its history. If you’re looking for the world’s largest buffalo monument, you’ve found it! Near Frontier Village, visit this special spot for a picture. You can’t resist!
The park is a beautiful haven for native plants and wildlife, and your dog is welcome to explore this national park’s 100 miles of trails with you. Why is Cuyahoga Valley National Park so dear to my heart? There is a winery in the park! Yes, a dog-friendly winery! After walking and exploring, sit under the trees at Sarah’s Vineyard with your dog. As with any park, check national park pet restrictions before visiting.
Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park and wildlife preserve in the Black Mountains of South Dakota. Custer State Park is known for its bison herds, scenic drives, historic sites, resorts and campgrounds. It is one of the top ten wildlife destinations in the world for the range of wildlife within the park boundaries. Just 15 miles from downtown Custer, this state park is majestic and inspiring!

For the crust, mix all the ingredients and leave in a warm place for an hour. Roll the dough and spread it on a greased, cast iron or deep dish pizza pan. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
