There is only one dog trail in Glacier National Park when it is not covered in snow. The McDonald Creek Bike Trail is a 2.5-mile paved trail between West Glacier and Apgar Village.

For more hiking, head south into the national forest with your dog. The Flathead, Kootenai and Lewis and Clark National Forests are within walking distance. All trails in the national forest are wildlife!
In fact, dogs are allowed to roam freely in many parts of the national forest. But because of the local wildlife, it’s not without great memories.

Flathead Lake is amazing. We spent a week near Glacier National Park giving it five stars for dog fun. A must see for everyone when you visit western Montana. You’ll find hiking trails, camping, outdoor recreation, boating and swimming.
The lake is located about an hour west of Glacier National Park. It is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River, measuring 30 miles long and 16 miles wide. So your travel time may vary slightly depending on which side of the lake you visit.
Much of the area surrounding Flathead Lake was once part of the Flathead Indian Territory, created in 1855 by the Treaty of Helgate. There are three tribes in this region: the Bitter Salt, the Upper Pandian, the Orelli, and the Kooteni.
Besides tribal lands, Montana has six national parks along Flathead Lake. Together these areas make up Flathead Lake State Park. Five areas of the state park are pet-friendly and allow dogs:
Duck Lake Lodge
Yellow Bay offers tent camping only (first come, first served), but other dog-friendly areas also offer tents and RVs. Some also have areas for hiking, biking, or boating! Cool Whip, Hercules, and I camped in our car with Wafers, Big Arms, and West Coast. Each offers a slightly different experience, so there are several theme parks around the lake.
My two favorite things about the park are the large petting zoo and the free water station. It’s so easy to clean up after your dog and enjoy a healthy pet!
Wayfarers is 67 acres of wooded beauty located in Bigfork, Montana. We see huge boulders and pineapple trees clinging to the cliffs on the North Shore (Minnesota). It also provides the best opportunity to enjoy the sunset after a beautiful day.
If you prefer urban trails with less chance of encountering wildlife, check out the Swan River Trail in Bigfork. It is a 3 mile walk with beautiful views of the Swan River.

Additionally, downtown Bigfork is great if you enjoy art, theater, live music, film festivals, art festivals, farmers markets, and dog sledding in the winter! If you’re not camping, Bigfork has several other lodging options.
This was my favorite stop, and probably the dog’s too – the park ranger was feeding the dog while we were there! If you’re looking for a beautiful place, the West is where you want to go. The camp is located in a large pine forest, giving you plenty of time to catch your breath.
But don’t sleep all the time! There are many trails in the park. Take the Osprey Overlook Trail to the top of the mountain for a better view. Then enjoy the Linderman view on Lake Road. The views from the trees to Flat Lake are amazing!
At the lake, you can enjoy a picnic lunch or enjoy rock climbing along the many smooth, colorful rocks that form part of the beach.

CoolWipe doesn’t want to wash its paws, but your dog can! Dogs are allowed on the beach and in the water unless otherwise noted.
If you and your dream dog want to camp near the water, Big Hand is the park for you! If you’re staying in a car or RV, don’t forget to bring some flat surfaces – due to their proximity to the beach, many campgrounds have uneven terrain. Until now! Nothing but dinner and a lake fire.
Kalispell, Montana is one of the best outdoor towns for 2021. It is also within a 30-minute drive of Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, ski resorts, and several state and national forests. Outside of town there is an isolated pine forest with various hiking trails (no camping).
Historically, the city focused on agriculture and industrial trade. However, it is a growing attraction for foreign tourists and tourists. It’s a great place to base yourself if you’re planning to stay in the city, as you’ll find plenty of options for pet owners, dogs, dog services, lodging, groceries, laundry, veterinarians, and pet supplies.

South of Flathead Lake lies the city of Polson. This charming little community has a lot to offer: great cafes, museums, antique shops, and more.
Polson is also home to the Flathead Cherry Festival. During this event, Main Street in downtown Polson is closed to traffic for a two-day Cherry Festival celebration with vendors, performers and lots of delicious food. Can you spend it on vacation? There are many cherry orchards in the area, so you’ll see plenty of roadside signs indicating which cherries are for sale this season.
Do you want to play with your dog? Visit the Trace Dolphin Dog Park. There is a jogging track on the hill, and if your child likes to swim, a dock and water are included.
