Best Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast – In this post, I wanted to look at the best dog friendly places in the west ~ California and Oregon, two states that are easy to travel with pets (Know me because I go here ALL THE TIME)! In these countries, I wanted to find dog-friendly places: mostly dog parks or dog beaches, pet-friendly hotels, and in the city that are safe and easy to bring with you. pets on trips. We found great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel in California….among others. Join me and my dog Dylan as we explore the “Dog Friendly Places of the West!”
Although my only dog-friendly Oregon beach trip was to Cannon Beach, remember: almost all Oregon beaches are dog-friendly, with fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: The Oregon Coast is a vacation spot for dog-friendly travel. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.
Best Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast
There are many reasons why I love Cannon Beach: beautiful town, many great restaurants, KAPE (Sleepy Monk!!), many first class hotels, pet friendly hotels and of course: 100% pet friendly beach. No rent needed here!! Oregon is quieter than California in this regard. And the views from Haystack Rock will amaze you, especially on a sunny day. Take a stroll down Ocean Avenue, enjoy a cup of tea on one of the outdoor patios, and stop at the adorable pet store around the corner: Puppy Love by the Sea.
Dog Friendly Campsites On California Beaches
*** My picks for pet friendly hotels in Cannon Beach are: Ocean Lodge & Surfsand Resort. Beachfront hotels, luxury hotels and pet friendly. Ocean Lodge has bigger rooms and a better view ~ but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock has nicer rooms and their Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite (and room service) in town…
Bend is my home in the United States, and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever lived in a better place for animals. Bend’s incredible number of dog parks puts California’s dog parks to shame, and nearly every restaurant in town with a patio is dog-friendly, including: McMenamin’s St. Francis School (pub, brewery, cinema, concert hall, cigar bar and hotel, all converted from a former Catholic school), Tahanga Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel… and the list goes on…
Bend has more dog-friendly parks, hotels, and restaurants per capita than any other city on this list! Dylan was photographed on the famous Deschutes River Trail in Bend.
*** My pick for the best pet friendly hotel(s) in Pico: Tetherow Golf Resort. At Teteru, you have an elevated condo golf course with gorgeous mountain views ~ and you’re only 5 minutes from downtown Bend and the historic Old Mill area. This is the best pet friendly place in town. Otherwise, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family resorts in the US.
Dog Friendly Beaches
Carmel Maine Beach is my favorite dog beach in the world: the famous Pebble Beach is on the right, and if you follow the beach a quarter mile to the left, you’ll see cypress trees blocking your view. – Million dollar homes of all kinds…Clint Eastwood lived here for a reason: something special about Carmel.
And this town loves dogs: they’re welcome everywhere ~ but I especially like Forge in the Outer Forest, whose dog-friendly menu…
Carmel isn’t the only place on Monterey Bay with a spectacular ocean view: Visit Pacific Grove and stroll along the beach.
*** My top hotel in Carmel: The Pebble Beach House. Yes, it’s expensive~ but after my parents and a helpful bell: all the rooms here are pet friendly! And you can bring a big dog. Try Doris Day’s Cypress Inn in Carmel for less.
The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In The Uk
I grew up in Orange County and just last week I was in Huntington Beach at the new outdoor mall in Pacific City. I have Dylan when I go home for Christmas ~ I mean I have to bring him to the mall… We were greeted by the shopkeepers upstairs, had coffee and we all had lunch on Simzi’s terrace with a view to the harbor and the ocean. I would go back in a heartbeat! And there’s one more reason to visit Huntington with your pooch: It’s the ONLY beach in Orange County where dogs are allowed outside.
***My favorite skin-friendly hotel in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach. Kimptons are always adorable and dog friendly…they even offer dog happy hours! It’s also very romantic, with ocean views enhanced by a blue-green color palette ~ and just a block from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean. And Huntington’s dog beach is about a mile north…
San Diego has not one, but two dog-friendly beaches, both in tony areas: Del Mar and Coronado. Dylan and I tried it last year at Del Mar’s dog beach just south of Encinitas. Although it’s not as big as Carmel Beach: it’s still amazing. Happy dogs going in and out of the water, people were friendly, parking and seating was on the same road as the beach entrance. Coronado’s white-sand dog-friendly beach is within walking distance of the popular pet-friendly Hotel Del Coronado.
Dog Beach in Coronado is one of the best places in Southern California to play with your pup on the sand.
A Dog Friendly Christmas Staycation
*** Best Hotels in San Diego: San Diego is big, so that’s where you want to be. For North County, try L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of all sizes. If you’re in the Gaslamp Quarter, try the modern Hotel Indigo with its rooftop terrace. If you want to be close to Coronado’s famous dog beach, check out Hotel del Coronado ~ it has three pet-friendly restaurants! (Only dogs up to 40 pounds in Del…)
I’m rounding up my picks for the best dog spots in the West! One thing I’d like to add is that the travel articles I’ve been reading lately talk about A.I. or by third-party publishers who are not affiliated with the sites they recommend. Don’t worry: I visited all the places on this list last year, so my information is valid for 2020 and beyond!
I’ve been traveling between California and Oregon every year since 2010 with Dylan ~ so these are all the places I’ve visited and hope to return to each year. When it comes to parks, Washington DC is a great place for a dog-friendly trip. There are many places that accept dogs of all shapes and sizes. You’ll find dog rentals on many trails in state parks and cities, and many stores and restaurants are pet-friendly. When traveling with your canine friends, you’ll find plenty of accommodation to choose from.
Know before you go: Starting August 1, 2024, all dogs and cats entering the US must complete an online CDC Dog Import form. The dog must also meet the latest CDC requirements, including being at least 6 months old and healthy upon arrival. Read all the requirements here.

Seattle, Washington’s capital, is dog-crazy, with zoos, beer bars, and restaurants galore. Many of the city’s green spaces are free, including Magnuson Park, Golden Gardens Park and Denny Park. City kids and their parents can enjoy world-class art outside the Olympic Sculpture Park. A 9 acre waterfront park in Elliot Bay with beautiful artwork.
While there are plenty of pet-friendly restaurants and shelters, homes on the north side of the Washington Ship Basin are especially popular with Fido’s friends. Hangouts like Mean Sandwich and Reuben’s Brews in Ballard and Norm’s Kitchen & Bar in Fremont are popular choices. And a little further north, the beach-style Bongo overlooking Green Lake, a sandpit for animals and games and delicious Caribbean food.
Among the city’s many hotels welcoming four-legged guests, three Kimpton properties have pioneered pet hospitality. Kimpton Hotel Monaco Seattle welcomes dogs of all breeds and sizes with in-room water bowls, pet beds and treats, and a concierge can arrange pet sitting and dog walking services.
Historic Spokane is home to one of the best urban parks in the state: Riverfront Park. Built for Rhe Expo ’74 World’s Fair, this 100-acre urban oasis features bridges and walkways overlooking Spokane Falls. Nearby Kendall Yards Night Market (runs Wednesdays from mid-May to September)
