The Finger Lakes region of New York consists of eleven long, narrow lakes (hence the “Finger Lakes”). You’ll find a variety of things to do around each lake, but the three most popular lakes – Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Cayuga Lake – are where the most fun happens.
While researching our Finger Lakes trip, I found many similarities to Traverse City. For example, the Finger Lakes are also known to be wine friendly. Just replace the grapes with TC Cherries!
We visited at the end of July 4th weekend and were surprised how busy it was. Now this could be due to CCID-19, but the region does not seem to be popular/touristy. Personally, I didn’t even know about it until I planned our trip there!
Dog Friendly Weekend Trips From Nyc
The Finger Lakes area is north of Ithaca (where Cornell University is located) and south/sandwiched between the big cities of Rochester and Syracuse. As far as Finger Lakes destinations go, the most popular cities are either above or below each of the Finger Lakes, with some in between. In this guide, I’m looking at the dog-friendly cities in the Finger Lakes.
Corning was our “home base” on our trip as we explored the various lakes, towns and parks in the area. It is called America’s “Crystal City” because of its expertise in glass and light bulbs. The first Edison bulbs were made in this city! In addition to the amazing history found here, Corning’s Gaffer District is famous for its many shops, restaurants and attractions.
Located on the southern edge of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen is full of small-town charm. The city is best known for visiting the beautiful valley of Watkins Glen State Park. While the Gorge Trail is not dog friendly, the Double Rim Trail is! I have an entire post dedicated to walking my dog in Watkins Glen here.
Going north along Seneca Lake, you will find the city of Geneva above. Like Watkins Glen, Geneva is a charming little town known for its colorful houses and is widely known as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World” with a Lake Trout Derby weekend to remember. You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly wineries around Geneva, and the beautiful Belhurst Castle isn’t dog-friendly, but it’s worth a quick stop.
Wagging Tails And Welcoming Trails: Finding The Best Pet Friendly Airbnb Stays In Hudson Valley And Catskills
From Geneva, head east to Cayuga and you’ll reach the famous women’s town of Seneca Falls. There is a lot of amazing history here that is worth exploring! As for dog-friendly, you won’t be able to get into the museums or Elizabeth Katie Stanton’s house, but the parks and art trails are dog-friendly! Plus, you can walk across the “It’s a Wonderful Life” bridge!
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to fully explore Penn Yan on our trip, but it should be on your list of dog-friendly towns to visit in the Finger Lakes. Located at the end of Keuka Lake, Penn Yan is a small town known for its craft fairs and home to the dog-friendly Wind Farm and Craft Market and Spotted Duck Creamery. You will also find some dog friendly hotels in Penn Yan.
Watkins Glen State Park is a must-see if in the Finger Lakes region. Even if you can’t bring your dog to the Gorge Trail, I highly recommend walking the dog-friendly trails. If you are with someone, one of you can do the Gorge Walk on the way out and change dogs, while the other can do the Gorge Walk on the way back. It worked out well for us. The women’s rights movement took place in the streets of Seneca Falls. Ludovico’s Art Gallery is dog friendly and has many great paintings of important events and figures that contributed to the movement. Kirby is not sure about the artists, which created a funny scene.!
