For example, some cities and states ban certain breeds of dogs. In some places there is more protection for animal abusers and those who harm animals. And for those of us who like to hike or go to the beach with our dogs, there are states that refuse to allow them to join us.
So which US state is the most pet friendly? Safewise.com reviewed information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and various online pet resources. They compiled the data and found that Maine is the most pet-friendly state in the country.

They discover what life must be like for people and pets in Maine. First of all, there are no breed restrictions in Maine. There are 76 dog-friendly beaches, hiking trails and dog parks. And if you are planning a trip with your pet, there are almost 1,000 hotels that welcome your pet.

Acadia is one of the few dog-friendly national parks in the country: dogs are welcome on leashes at all sledding trails, most trails and all campgrounds (except Isle au Haut). Read the park rules to find out what is prohibited – or complete the Bark Ranger program, then the rangers will call your child (and you can buy a souvenir collar). Located on Bark Harbor’s main street, Bark Harbor offers a variety of delicious home-cooked meals.
Dog owners love this 85-hectare nature reserve, which allows leashed dogs to navigate with voice commands. Here you’ll find 2.5 miles of hiking trails and the city’s only natural waterfall, a great place for dogs to splash around.
Another place where the voice command dog has the right to walk the dog off-leash, this one is for the wilderness bassist. This prestigious Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust property features 8.5 miles of hiking trails and 3 miles of shoreline on Cupsuptic and Mooselookmeguntic lakes, as well as 4 hiking campsites.

Named after the popular laboratory, this nearly three-kilometer trail through mossy forests, ancient granite rocks and swampy meadows has been donated to the Blue Mountain Heritage Trust on the condition that it remains a place where dogs can run. However, it is worth going into the nearby Peterbrook Nature Reserve, which is home to a beautiful waterfall.
Dogs and their humans get a special spot at Hadlock Field to watch the Portland Sea Dogs minor league baseball team – and every game starts with a walk onto the field to signal the alarm.
Maine Day Ventures’ ¾-mile walking tour stops at businesses in Dock Square and the Lower Village that cater to dogs and their owners (think ice cream shop, gift shop Digs, Divots & Dogs, toy-filled pet store Scalawags). There are many treatments for both types.
