Family Friendly Places To Visit In California – I was born in California and love to travel all over the country, but California will forever be my favorite state to explore. From beautiful ocean views to stunning mountains, deserts, and valleys, California has a little bit of everything! My family is finally getting to travel again as we learn more about California. We’ve been able to take at least one trip a month for the past 5 months and are planning more family trips to California the rest of the way. At least for now!
Many people ask me where is my favorite place to go with my kids. Honestly, this is a very difficult question to answer. Our children have traveled with us for many years. I still remember my son learning to swim in South Lake Tahoe. They are more travelers than us and we joke that they pack themselves before every trip!

Each trip brought new memories and exciting adventures. I am so lucky to be able to travel to some of the most beautiful places in California with my husband and children. Traveling with kids takes a lot of preparation, and before every trip I usually do a lot of research to find family-friendly destinations. However, here are 6 kid-friendly and inexpensive places to visit in California! No, Disneyland is not on this list, but it is a great family vacation destination.
Great Wolf Lodge Southern California
Yosemite National Park is my favorite place to visit in California. No matter how many times I visit, I am always in awe of the beautiful scenery, majestic waterfalls, and hidden adventures. The best part is that visiting Yosemite National Park is cheaper than other places in California and completely kid-friendly! Although you have to pay an entry fee, you can pack snacks and meals to save on food and go for free. If you’re planning to visit this summer, you’ll want to book well in advance, so plan accordingly.
We recently visited San Francisco for the first time since 2016. I had already done a lot of research and that’s when we decided to do more outdoor activities to avoid masks and vaccinations. A family trip to San Francisco can be a bit more expensive, but it’s worth it! My kids love to walk the Golden Gate Bridge, explore the Art Gallery, see the pier, go on an adventure trip to Golden Gate Park, and play at the beach. If you have young children, I recommend going to the zoo and exploring.
Pismo Beach is one of California’s most popular beach towns. Pismo Beach Pier is fun and kid-friendly with an amusement park and delicious restaurants. Our kids loved Oceana Dunes! You can also explore the nearby beaches of SLO, Avila Beach, and Morro Bay.
Oakhurst is a hidden gem of a town just south of Yosemite National Park. We spent weekends hanging out at Bass Lake, eating delicious meals at some of the most beautiful spots in Oakhurst, and enjoying the quiet of the mountains with our kids. North of Oakhurst, you can take a scenic train ride through the Sierra Nevadas. Oakhurst offers fun activities like AXT shooting and off-road adventures. In the off-season, you can find great deals on small shirks.
