Fall is best for hiking the trails and offers breathtaking views.
From local shops to beautiful parks and hiking trails, Northern Indiana’s Amish country has much to offer pets. Visit Shipshewana Trading Place, where you’ll welcome leashed puppies at the Midwest’s largest flea market. Just a warning: after a weekend experiencing the Amish way of life, it may be difficult to return to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Wisconsin is the perfect place to take lots of “cheesy” blank photos with your dog! Most restaurants allow dogs on their terraces and many charming B&Bs welcome them. This resort loves puppies as much as people, so they can relax and unwind together. If you’re feeling less relaxed and would rather be outdoors, take a hike at Big Foot Beach State Park right on Lake Geneva.
Pepper is here to drink beer, and there’s no better place than Milwaukee. He’s unusually pet-friendly, so convincing Fido to come back to Chicago with you might be a problem. Stay a while at one of their pet-friendly hotels, but the Kimpton Journeyman boutique is known for its beautiful views of the Journeyman River, additional pet fees, and convenience.

Stroll the dog-friendly Riverwalk and view rotating art pieces to learn more about Milwaukee’s history. And of course you have to drink a beer. Check out Black Husky Brewing Company, the B.Y.O.F. Bring Fido (or any food you need).
Indianapolis is about a three-hour drive from Chicago and is home to several dog-friendly breweries, shops, and restaurant patios. A personal favorite of street dogs, Metazoa Brewing Co. features a dog park and donates 5% of profits to animal and wildlife organizations. Host a slumber party or sip on a Ruh Roh Ale, then head to Three Dog Bakery on Mass Avenue for dog-friendly treats.
The dog will walk along the Cultural Trail, which connects Mass Avenue to five other Indy cultural districts. When you arrive in Broad Ripple, smell the dog park before dining on the patio at Broad Ripple Brewpub, an English-style pub with a spacious patio and delicious vegetarian food.

It is a series of large chalk monoliths known as chalk pyramids. Dogs are allowed to be off-leash and you will feel like you are on another planet. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Since we’re originally from Florida, we love being at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with Brickell and Digby, I now understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features miles of sandy beaches and cliffs overlooking Lake Michigan. As in many areas, some beaches do not allow dogs. So ask the park’s friendly staff, get a map, or check online. We found that Brickell and Digby were more places on this beautiful lakefront than we expected. However, keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in the dunes for safety reasons.
