Dog Friendly Vacations South Carolina

Dog Friendly Vacations South Carolina – The coastal town of Beaufort, South Carolina, is an ideal destination for domestic travelers. Walk the streets, admire the houses and gardens, then dine on one of the dog-friendly patios, or order takeout and find a nice spot in the park to watch the river and people go by.

With pet-friendly Charleston to the north and Hilton Head a little further south, it’s easy to drive past Beaufort without even realizing you’re there. In fact, we’ve done it…several times. And what a shame, because it’s the perfect place to spend a few hours stretching your legs, checking out fun shops, and enjoying a relaxing picnic in the park!

Beaufort finally came into our sights when we went to visit friends whose sailboat was moored near the Beaufort River. Just a glance at the winding streets with their moss-covered oak trees and antebellum houses, as well as the bustling city center with its riverside park, immediately attracted our friends! We returned a few days later to spend the day thinking about all of this.

The town is located on the island of Port Royal and was originally a shipbuilding center. It later became popular among plantation owners in the Netherlands, and both industries depended on the river for transportation.

Over the years, Beaufort has done an exceptional job preserving its historic character and connection to water. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park extends from the Woods Memorial Bridge to the downtown marina and serves as the city’s front yard. Even businesses on the south side of Bay Street, Beaufort’s main thoroughfare, have front and rear entrances, truly connecting the park and river to the city.

Life in Beaufort now seems to move at a pleasant pace where beauty is appreciated and cherished. Strolling the quiet streets, we enjoyed the lush, meticulously tended gardens, the intricate details of lovingly restored century-old homes, and the cul-de-sacs with stunning views across the vast moorland. And Waterfront Park, with all its benches, swings and seating areas, seems like a warm invitation to sit and watch the river flow.

We’ve visited many beautiful towns over the years, but few have felt as welcoming to us and the dogs as Beaufort. If you take this route, I highly recommend stopping for a visit. Stroll the streets, then dine on one of the dog-friendly patios or go outside, find a nice spot on the lawn, and people-watch.
