I don’t think anyone would dispute the beauty of the West Coast. But in my opinion, the Oregon Coast offers the most amazing views and variety of things to do and see. As someone who obviously loves my dogs, it means a lot that the Oregon Coast Dog is also very friendly. So browse what I believe is the most comprehensive guide to must-visit places for you and your dog.
While most places are dog friendly, there are plenty of places where we can stretch out six feet, there are a few places I didn’t mention in the article. Whether you’re traveling with your fur baby or not, let me guide you around the PNW coast from Astoria to Crescent City, avoid the crowds, do it on a budget, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
I recommend exploring the entire coast in at least a full week, but plan for a longer period of time if you really want to take the time to see everything you want to see!
Traveler Tip: Many cool places charge for parking. You may want to consider picking up an Oregon Pacific Coast Pass or an Oregon Park Pass, which will be cheaper to enjoy than paying for each park ticket.
Places To See On A Pet Friendly American Road Trip
If you’re coming from Portland, you’ll want to start at the north end of Astoria Beach and work your way down the coast from there. Astoria, a charming beach town with lots of hills and lots of views.
One place you’ll want to include in your Astoria itinerary is the Astoria Column. Located on the highest hill in the city, you can climb the many steps to the top for fantastic views of the area. From the top of the column, you can see the confluence of the Pacific Ocean, Columbia River, and Youngs River, as well as the Astoria-Megler Bridge.
Now you can’t put your dog in the top row because there’s barely enough room for people to fit in the carriage, let alone a shaggy dog. But you can take a walk to the top of the hill, eat lunch at one of the picnic tables, and enjoy the view of your fur baby from the top of the hill.
If you have kids with you, you can even buy a cheap wooden slide to climb to the top and slide down. Each costs $5.

Another fun activity to do with kids is the Astoria Riverfront Tram. It’s free (although they accept donations) and they’ll pick you up and take you on a ride on a section of the Columbia River in a historic trolley car.
For history lovers, they offer an interesting historical area. And another plus, if you bring your dog and he is well behaved, you can take your dog for a walk!
Another great destination is Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Lots of interesting history, a castle to explore and beautiful paths through the trees and along the river.
Dogs are allowed on the trail and it’s a great place to take your kids to explore our state’s history.

Take a walk and look inside the sunken ship and let your imagination tell the story of this unfortunate accident! In summer, if you’re lucky enough to have the right conditions (warm weather, no moon, no fog, etc.), this is a great place to see bioluminescent algae lighting up the waves!
One evening last summer (in 2021) I was able to go there, and although it was too foggy to see the waves, there was also seaweed on the sand and it was magical to see the sand with my dog’s every step and sparkling with life. Understand!
