Best Hiking Vacations With Dogs – The Great Lakes region has many scenic dog-friendly walking and hiking trails. In this post, you can find Top of the Ridge Farm Bed & Breakfast’s top 10 favorites in no particular order.
While warmer temperatures and longer days in spring, summer, and fall make these hikes more popular, don’t give up on winter. In most cases, crampons or snowshoes are all you need to enjoy the beautiful nature all year round. Just remember to protect your pup’s paws (Musher’s Secret Pet Paw Protection Wax is a favorite wax) and pick up after you and your pup.

A Guide To Dog Friendly Northern Michigan
Big thanks to Jess from the incredible The Barn Doggie Daycare (also the best place for your dog to spend the day…every day) who helped put together this curated list with the help of local dog owners who have traveled miles. on the scenic trails in the local area with your best friends. And special thanks to model moms Noella (Mac and Indy) who love many of these campaigns, and Gina Gina Creative Outlet (Stout). Our Labrador retriever puppy loves to walk the trail as much as we do. Every time we look at our hiking boots or grab our backpack, Jake, our trail-loving pup, shows up at the door, ready for adventure. He’s full of energy and curiosity, and he loves to smell good, so Jake can’t think of a better adventure than a big walk in the woods.
The mountains surrounding Asheville are filled with dog-friendly trails. But these tours have been dog-tested and approved time and time again by our staff, and they’re at the top of our list of favorite dog adventures. Leash and run these trails for good exercise, amazing views and fun with your pup.
Wherever your adventures take you, always remember to leave no trace to protect these beautiful places. And please always walk the dog on a leash. This is polite to other walkers and is also important for wildlife and their own protection.
Leash Contribute to making the trail fun and enjoyable for everyone by keeping the dog on a leash at all times. Our favorite is the Ruffwear Slackline Leash. The comfortable padded handle doubles as a waist belt, and the high-quality swivel neck clip helps keep us from getting tangled. Hot weather and vigorous play can lead to rapid dehydration, so make sure your four-legged adventurer has plenty of water on the trail. Jake loves the Ruffwear Bivy Bowl for mid-hike rehydration; this collapsible mug is super lightweight and folds up to save space in our boxes.

Is your pup new to the trail? It is always best to start small and work your way up, starting with shorter hikes and gentler terrain. Tackle more challenging terrain and longer distances as your adventure companion gets smarter and more comfortable.
Always leave a trail, pack what you pack, and if you see trash, pick it up and pack it.
Stay on a marked trail, tell someone where you’re going, pack safety and wayfinding gear, and don’t rely on your cell phone to find the way. Always follow good trail etiquette. And before you go, always check the trail kiosk, official maps, and park or ranger office for notices of diversions, trail closures, safety information, and restrictions. Do you want to take your dog on a hike in an American national park? ? We share the five best national parks in the United States.
American national parks offer a variety of valuable services and experiences. However, roaming around with your four-legged best friend is not necessarily one of them. But there are parks where they can enjoy themselves with you. In this article, we share five dog-friendly US national parks where you can hike with your pup.
Top Dog Friendly Vacation Travel Destinations
I am a national park junkie, dog lover and love to take my “main” with me everywhere. I also prefer to go places where he can join me. (Apart from an annual trip abroad to Greece, Patagonia or Costa Rica.)
Dogs are welcome in almost all US national parks, but what they can and cannot do varies widely. I have been very fortunate to have been able to visit almost every national park in the US without a dog (56/63 by my count at the time of writing, leaving only Alaska and Samoa). Cotopaxi and I like to go everywhere together. So I began to explore, discover and experience the American National Parks that he not only allowed me to join; but that he is legally allowed to leave the car and go for a walk with me.
Me and Cotopaxi in Southwest Harbor in Maine’s Acadia National Park on one of the many dog-friendly trails.
Taking your dog to a national park is a privilege. Leash them, clean them and be careful. Most bear encounters on the Appalachian Trail are caused by stray dogs, a ranger told me when I hiked the trail in 2023. And while we’re at it… Leave no tracks and pack your 10 essentials :).
Experience Mount Shasta
Cotopaxi is a B.A.R.K. Please rate and if you choose to bring one of the best companions in the world, please consider the same.
We spent 10 days in this long and narrow Virginia National Park while I hiked 110 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The AT grades in this park are relatively less steep than most ATs and are great for dog walkers. Big Meadows Lodge has pet-friendly rooms, and all three of our campsites had lots of pups. Campgrounds in the park provide access to the Whitesides, which were shorter hikes when we weren’t on the AT. Generally, this park is accessible to DC, Baltimore and several other East Coast cities. You can feel good about knowing your poo and will be able to get out and explore. Of all the US National Parks I’ve visited because of my dog, this might be the best.
From the Endless Wall Trail to Long Point to the Kaimur Miners, this West Virginia national park is known for rafting and rock climbing/mountain biking nearby. It also has great dog-friendly walking trails.
The city of Fayetteville is a charming little town with producers, artists, breweries and coffee shops. We stayed at this Sasquatch themed airbnb which has a HUGE fenced yard that is also pet friendly.

Cotopaxi will likely raft the New River in the near future (his canoeing and kayaking experience is patchy at best). However, he enjoys going to NRG and this new national park is great to visit.
Cotopaxi’s first national park was also his first tent camping experience and our first trip with him. The national park and state park border each other and we did the 3 Dune Challenge which is technically in the state park. According to their website, “Leashed pets are allowed in both national and state parks. Dogs are welcome on all beaches except West Beach and State Park swimming areas. They are also allowed on all trails except the Pinhook Bog Trail and the Glenwood Dunes Trail System.”
It is an often overlooked US national park. It is located near Chicago and is accessible to much of the Great Lakes region. We stayed at Dunewood Campground and from there you can hike and bike along Lake Michigan along the shores of Beverly. Stock up on good food at the Goblin and Grocer (just a short walk from the campsite).
We spent a summer living in two different small towns in northern Michigan that border the shores of this wonderful national lake, Lake Michigan.
Best Dog Harnesses For Hiking Of 2024
And that included trail maintenance, cleaning and a few other things. This allowed me and Cotopaxi to walk the trails all the time. From Pyramid Point to Empire Bluff to Platte River Trails to Alligator Hill, we had plenty of dog-friendly trails. The only two trails I did that weren’t dog friendly were the Dune Climb and Sleeping Bear Point.
The stairs up and down are also dog-friendly. The small towns around Sleeping Bear (Franklin, Interlochen, Empire, Leelanau, Leland, Northport, etc.) were also very dog friendly.
The only adventure I did and my partner and Cotopaxi stayed home was the ferry ride and excursion to the Manitou Islands. I wrote about visiting the Manitou Islands on my website HERE.
In Joshua Tree National Park, Cotopaxi and on one of the MANY untraveled dirt roads, perfect for a road trip.
