Spend an afternoon on the beach, sailing, soaking up the sun or swimming. When you feel like moving, hop in a kayak and drift along with views of tall ships and beautiful bridges. If you want to stay dry, grab a bagel and a bike and cycle the islands and challenge yourself on the rolling hills. If golf is what you like to swing, play 9 holes at the local course – I hear burgers after the tee.
Newport gets all the attention, and it’s perfect for anyone who knows Jamestown Jamestown is Newport’s soft-spoken, laid-back, no-fuss next-door neighbor in miniature, which means fewer people, generally less stress, easy to park, easy to walk, bike-friendly, and easy to make dinner reservations (but you can Not required). You can go to Newport for the vineyards and the folk festival and the night races and the nightlife, and I don’t mean to knock that, I love Newport too, but Jamestown is where I like things to be very slow.

Until this summer, I’d only spent days or evenings in Jamestown — swimming and having dinner with friends or stopping to eat on the way home as the Newport crowd chased me across the bridge. Three days in Jamestown meant I had plenty of time to explore the island, so for this trip I ditched the diving gear and enjoyed the island on foot and on wheels.If you don’t want to leave your dogs behind, I’m happy to report that you don’t have to. I stayed with my parents in their RV parked at Fort Getty Park** If you are camping (RV or tent) this is a great home base, equipped with bathroom/shower facilities, walking trails, dog friendly bays/beaches, boat ramps, and boat camps for kids. . If camping isn’t for you, the island has a number of hotels ranging from affordable to luxury Here’s Tripathi’s list of the 10 best places to stay on the island ** Fort Getty, though beautiful with the ruins of a historic fort, charges a fee along with fishing piers, boat launches, beaches, pavilions and walkways. If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, I’d skip Fort Getty and save the fort for you at $20 per day for a parking permit, saving you more time for the more exciting state parks, which also offer free admission.
Jamestown is a 1.5 hour drive from the central Connecticut coast. I had planned to have lunch in Jamestown around 9:30am on Friday morning with two dogs and a 6 month old baby. Since I had a dog and wanted a quiet place with easy/close parking off the main drag I walked into the Quint Village Heart Bakery and Cafe and to my surprise, it was dog friendly inside and out. The beautiful Jamestown Community Playground was one of the most amazing playgrounds I’ve ever seen, and its location across the street is perfect if you’re traveling with kids (let the kids run around before sitting down for a nice lunch on the patio). Lunch was a bit pricey ($16 for a sandwich and iced coffee ring) but I’m glad I found such a great little place with its friendly staff and dog-friendly atmosphere.
After lunch, you can make a quick stop before heading out to check out where you’ve chosen to stay for the weekend.The Jamestown Windmill in the Windmill Hill Historic District is listed as one of Jamestown’s top attractions. I have to admit, without its fleet, the small space and structure is a bit off.If you want to see this historic 1787 structure on the National Register of Historic Places, stop by on your way into town or while cruising around the island.
After lunch, I met my parents at Fort Getty, where we set up the campsite and rested for the few hours we had been here. Wherever you live, come on in, have a drink and enjoy the cool sea breeze

After you relax, head down Narragansett Avenue, which is basically the main street with shops and restaurants. Jamestown is a small island and makes for good biking if you don’t mind a few (okay, a lot) of hills. If you want to head down Narragansett Avenue for dinner, take two or four wheels and if you want, time yourself and head over to J22 Tap and Table before 6 to enjoy their oyster/clam dollar special. Nothing pairs an island vacation better than a raw bar, especially one with a bargain-basement deal.
J22 is known for its excellent food and is a great option for dining outside or on the patio in the small restaurant. You can also visit one of the nearby restaurants on the Strip – Simpatico offers a lovely outdoor patio, the perfect place to enjoy a warm summer night. Chef Charlie offers a family-friendly seafood restaurant with plenty of options, from casual fish and chips to fine dining (there’s a three-course menu).
End the night with drinks at the place you call home for the weekend and tomorrow is all about island hopping
It’s the kind of place where mornings slow down and you don’t have to wake up early to try to lock everything in, while making time for a weekend getaway or a good book, a slow weekend of sightseeing. After a rainy morning we had breakfast and coffee at the campsite and when the sky cleared, we got in the car and drove to a state park, Beavertail State Park. Here, you can see the lighthouse (site of the third oldest lighthouse in America) and go inside the Lighthouse Museum. While you’re here, expect sweeping views of Narragansett Bay and walking trails that take you to some of the ocean’s peaks. A 2.3-mile hiking trail along the edge of the park offers some exercise and promising views along the way (the trail can be a bit muddy, so be careful during tick season). It’s a great place to picnic if you decide to bring a blanket and lunch (or this handy “tablet in a bag” that makes picnicking 100 times easier). If you want to sit down to lunch at a restaurant, head into town for something lighter.

After lunch, you can rent a kayak, or if you brought your bike, bike a loop of the island (either a short 11-mile loop in the south/central part or a 25-mile loop that takes you across the island.) You can play all 9 holes at the Jamestown Golf Course to relax. If interested, head into town to browse the shops and enjoy the view of the bay and the East Ferry Beach Bridge. Enjoy a Sunday-style breakfast on the island Take some supplies to the beach and head to Fort Weatheril State Park Fort Weatherl sits atop a 100-foot granite peak and is home to a coastal defense battery. The area is popular, known and loved for its spectacular views of Newport Harbor and the Eastern Passage of Narragansett Bay. If you’re in town during Newport’s Tall Ship event or the America’s Cup race, it’s a popular place to watch the boats.
Eclipse Kingdom Dome Beach is one of New England’s most beautiful spots, a great place to park a beach chair, swim, cliff jump, and watch sailors and scuba divers. This small cove is one of New England’s most popular dive sites, so be sure to ask the divers about the interesting creatures they’ve seen while diving. When you need a break from the beach, check out the rest of the park and you’ll find an abandoned coastal cannon fort, now a graffiti canvas, and another spot on the bay.
After the beach, perhaps on your way out of town, take a leisurely stroll around the island to see some of the city’s lesser-known areas. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, rolling farms, a million rabbits, and tranquil parks and beaches inhabited by locals.
