Dog Friendly Vacations Near Ohio – First stop – Northern Ohio! I read that Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the most dog friendly national parks and allows dogs on most trails. So my original plan was to explore the park most of the day with Oats, and since there was a waterfall, I figured there would be enough water spots to cool off. However, like most things I plan, it didn’t work out.
We started the day by exploring the Brandywine Gorge Trail, one of the famous Great Falls Trails. The trail was nice and shady, but the base of the falls was covered, so we had fewer photo opportunities than I expected. We could see the falls, but unless we went down several dark steps, we couldn’t get a good view. And I would jump out of the plane before opening the wooden stairs (yeah…problem).

Although we found a nice stream for Oats to soak in, it was 95°C and the humidity very high, so it wasn’t enough to cool him down. We walked 2 miles around the trail, played in the water and took pictures (and lots of water breaks) for about an hour, but by then it was too hot for him. I didn’t want to push myself to the point of heatstroke (which would ruin the vacation a bit) so I canceled my plans to spend the day hiking in the park.

Instead, I quickly found (thanks Google) a small dog park with a beach about 20 minutes away in Stow, Ohio. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend the Bow Wow Beach Dog Park. He had fun swimming and playing with the other pups, but the best part was washing the dogs on the way out. They have 3 areas separated by rubber bands and I managed to give Oatsy a little bath before we left (the water turned him a little green).
While the oats were drying, we sat outside at Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream, which allows dogs in the outdoor seating area. We each had our own ice cream and it was fantastic. Ellie also joined in as at least 10 people stopped to greet Oats and he enjoyed greeting them with his elephant. Always a laugh.
Our wonderful Airbnb host suggested we drive to Chagrin Falls for a sunset walk. It’s a cute little town with a beautiful waterfall and generally a great place to walk oat. We were both hot and tired all day so we walked for about an hour and took pictures.
We also stopped at another small waterfall on the way back and walked a bit. We had a really fun day in Northern Ohio… exploring waterfalls and eating ice cream. Andddd tries to stay calm (fails).
