Best Dog Friendly Walking Trails Near Me – While North Carolina’s Crystal Beach is primarily known for its beautiful beaches and beach activities, there are several notable trails that give you the opportunity to explore some of the forests and swamps. If you want to go out with your dog or just hang out with your favorite friends, I have great information – the streets most of Carteret County are dog friendly! There’s a beautiful Emerald Isle beach that you won’t want to miss on your next adventure!
After our recent trip to Hilton Head, I was inspired to write a post on a great South Carolina trail and realized I still had to share my favorite trail from my hometown! After visiting here all my life and living in the area for over 10 years, I’ve discovered some of my favorite trails and they are all very dog friendly!

Although there are plenty of options to get our feet up in the area, we always find ourselves on the same highway! Keep reading to learn the best Emerald Isle trail for dogs and why we love it so much!
Kings Park, Retford Buggy And Dog Friendly
The Emerald Isle Woods Trail is part of a 41-acre marine preserve on the Emerald Isle. The nature preserve includes forests, swamps and scenic roads winding along Bog Sound Road. There is also a full golf course and dining area.
You’ll see the entrance to Emerald Woods and the trail to the right off Coast Guard Road. The trail is a total of 1.7 miles long and there is a variety of environments to see along the way, including forests, swamps and moss-covered areas. My favorite area of the trail is the long parking lot (including floating kayaks) with some of the best views of the Emerald Isle on the island!
Bogue Sound also has some great views! Make sure to keep your eyes open for deer and birds as you walk! At the entrance to the main part of the route, there is a pavilion suitable for picnics and a newly constructed bathroom. The road is well maintained, although a bit steep, with roots in some areas. However, the access area is a combination of paved roads and footpaths and is handicapped accessible. There are some narrow sections of the trail that are moderately steep (although you can only climb that island).
We like the road to the west to see some marshy areas – great places for reptiles and amphibians! We came back to the main road entrance into the forest and found the area often covered with moss. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset all year round.

Cedar Point is our favorite road in the Tidelands area! I’m glad you posted on Hidden Gems of the Crystal Coast! The well-maintained 1.3-mile loop includes a variety of coastal environments including marshes, wetlands, and maritime forests! It also has an inner loop of 0.6 miles that you can follow or take the outer loop for a longer route. Both roads are flat. I really like this road because it goes through muddy fields and shallow water where the dogs can get wet! The route also has spectacular panoramic views of the White Oak River, and there are always plenty of shore birds to attract the dogs’ attention! Tip: Due to its location, this road can easily flood after a major storm. Remember to bring a disinfectant when you go, especially in summer!
Although there is no technology on the island, the dog-friendly Emerald Isle Trail is right next to the bridge. The trail begins at the parking lot at Cedar Point Campground near Highway 58. There is a bathroom located in the parking lot near the dirt road and public boat parking lot! From the parking lot, I prefer to go through the first intersection on the left. This direction starts from most of the boardwalk and the beach. Find crabs, crabs and vertebrates and find crabs in the mud.
There are several areas of sound access where your puppy can get wet. You’ll walk some long and nice paths until you eventually return through the forest. The wooded portion of the trail has a few small bridges and enters a marshy landscape which you will cross the road to complete the loop. The Tidelands Trail is always well maintained, well traded and very dog friendly!
The Patsy Pond Trail winds through the Croatan Forest and is a great way to get your legs up in the middle of the largest longleaf pine forest in the area! There are three lanes of varying lengths, the longest being 1.9 miles. I love walking down the aisle and enjoying the heights of the longleaf pines, which seem small in comparison.

There are also several small ponds that attract animals like deer, foxes, lizards and even black bears if you’re lucky! Fun fact – this area is also home to the endangered amphibian gopher toad, which depends on wildfire and needs this special ecosystem to survive! Helpful Tip: Make sure they do a controlled burn before going on the trail, which often happens in the spring and fall.
This trail is on Highway 24 in Newport, off the coast of NC. Make sure you bring plenty of water as there is no running water or bathrooms. Although the trail is easy to follow, be careful of tree roots and wear sunscreen and spray in summer. The tree provides good shade, but due to its height there are some areas where there is no shade! The trails are open from dawn to dusk all year round.
The Roosevelt Trail is located on the grounds of the NC Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores. The line is named after President Roosevelt, whose family donated the ocean to the country for conservation. The total distance of the exit road through the maritime forest is 1.2 miles. The path crosses the old valley and follows a small creek along the edge of the marsh to the beach on the other side. The Roosevelt Trailhead is located outside the Aquarium entrance and is open daily until 4:30 pm.
It’s free to visit this dog trail, although the NC Aquarium is worth a visit, but if you’re exploring the Crystal Coast with kids this is something you won’t want to miss! Although the aquarium is not limited to street puppies only, welcome them on a leash! After entering the aquarium, go past the main aquarium entrance. There you will see the entrance clearly marked at the end of the road. The trail begins with the wind blowing around an old oak tree in the dense maritime forest.

After walking through the forest, you will find that you are on Bog Sound Island on the right and a small river bank on the left. The riverfront is a great place to find turtles and lizards. At the end of the trail there is a short loop that leads to the sound before continuing down the steps to the parking lot.
The loop offers beautiful views, a great place to watch birds as well as a quiet swimming area for dogs. Due to the narrow path, I recommend reserving this path for the cooler months as in the summer dogs are a magnet for lice and the shady forests are a haven for flies. This route is more enjoyable in winter and offers spectacular views all year round!
The Elliott Coos Nature Trail is part of Fort Macon State Park and is a fun way to visit the Emerald Isle. The Elliott Quays Nature Trail is a large trail that spans 3.3 miles through the state park area and is the longest trail and one of the most scenic trails on the list. The fort was built before the Civil War and was actively used during World War II. It’s fun to visit historical sites, see old guns, and learn a lot about our military history. The best is free admission! While the actual castle is off-limits to dogs, the surrounding area is dog-friendly and bike-friendly! (Note – although you should not leave your dog in a parking lot, it is illegal here within city limits).
This fort is situated on the eastern end of the Atlantic coast. You can easily access the beach by road.
